What’s It Going To Be?

Computers are one of the most interesting and complex machines on the planet. They have the ability to intrigue anyone who sits down and attempts to use it. On the other hand though, they also have the ability to confuse the heck out of you! When I think about computers, I think about the internet, Microsoft Word (for school), and games. What sort of computer I buy should be user friendly in all three of these aspects.

First you have to make a big decision… Apple or Windows. They both have great features, and are both more user friendly for each individule user. Windows is compatible with several computer manufacturers, including HP Pavilion, Compaq, and Dell.

Now, in my case, I need to take a close look at each option, as I have specific uses for my machine. When purchasing a computer you should be aware of what your main purpose with it is. For some it is business, others gaming, and for many, it is used for school. Make sure you test each version, Apple and Windows. If Apple seems the most compatible with your purpose, then congradulations! Your choice is made. But if you decide Apple is not right for you, take a look at all the operating systems that there is for Windows. There are several, each with different features, and you should choose the one that is right for you.

As you can see, the purchase of a computer is not always black and white. What’s it going to be for you?

Learn Korean: Part 2 – Social Status in Culture

Part 1 of this series covered the language and language families in general for the Asian languages. Part 2 will cover the social conduct that is seen throughout Asian countries.

To begin, the social structure in Asia, and especially East Asian countries, stems from Taoism and Confucianism philosophies.

Confucianism

Confucianism has played a big role in setting the social structure in Asia and has more influence than any other belief or philosophy has. Now before I begin, keep in mind I am not saying all Asians follow the Confucian religion, but deep down in Asian culture there are Confucian beliefs. An Asian person may not even recognize what they do as Confucian beliefs, yet it still shapes their beliefs and morals.

One of the major structures in Asian culture influenced by Confucianism is the family structure. One of the Confucian beliefs is respect for parents. This explains why Asian children are almost always so respectful of their parents and do everything they are told. Kids will be kids, and disobedience always enters the picture. If you look at the larger picture however, you will find that Asian culture puts great respect on elders and people are trained that way from birth. Anyone older than you is going to be respected. This is so important in Asia that it is structured into the language itself. In Korea, there will be different endings for verbs, and sometimes different verbs altogether that need to be used depending on who you speak with. If you speak to someone older than you, you will need to use a polite and honorific style of speech. It differs from English in the fact that the actual language and words change. In English, it is simply acceptable to speak politely and add a sir on the end for example. The language doesn’t change however. Both languages have their own ways to show respect. Korean just has it actually included in the words and basic structures of the language.

Some other Confucian beliefs that have structured Asian culture are humility, honesty and trustworthiness, and loyalty.

Taoism

While I mention beliefs, I feel I should introduce Taoism and how it has influenced Asian culture as well. To start off, what is Taoism? Basically, Taoism beliefs strongly link man to nature. Men will search and find harmony and peace, usually in nature. Taoism says everything is connected and their is energy that flows between everything. A common power runs through everything. Many Asians will follow some beliefs of Taoism. Once again, it may not be about the religion, but just the whole philosophy of it. Searching for peace and harmony can be a great thing for anybody to do. I believe everybody could use a little more peace and harmony in their lives. Nature really does have some power over people when it comes to peace. Try sitting in an open, beautiful field with a slow breeze. If it doesn’t calm you down and relax you, then something is odd. Unfortunately it is hard for most people in the United States (or many other countries for that matter) to do this. Industrialization has taken over and lives are too busy. You can definitely try to make do with what you have though. Fortunately for Asia, there are still many beautiful landscapes virtually untouched by industrialization. Nature is everywhere in Asia. You will find some of the most beautiful palaces situated on lily ponds (such as Gyeongbokgung Palace in near Seoul).

Wherever it may be, everyone can find an escape in nature. Asians have realized this and have grown to love nature. They also have set up a social structure of great respect for others.

Part 3 will teach Korean and Asian culture through details on Korean schools and educational systems. Stay tuned and check back soon!

You Might Still Want to Refinance

Even though rates are on the rise, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t refinance.

Practically everyone has refinanced or thought about it at one point in time. We’ve seen the dozens of commercials that urge us to do it. With rates at record lows over the past few years, refinancing has helped many borrowers lower their monthly payments.

But rates are now on the rise. Refinancing applications have fallen slightly. Most people don’t think you should refinance when rates are going up. However, many refinancings are “cash-out” refinancing. That means that equity is handed over to the homeowner in return for a larger mortgage. Many people need that cash.

Some people are refinancing their homes for a “cash-out” because they have a significant home-equity line of credit balance. This line of credit has an adjustable-interest rate, which is going up on them. They refinance it in with their first mortgage at a fixed rate. They aren’t eliminating the debt, just fixing the interest rate and monthly payment. If you don’t need the revolving line of credit, you should probably take advantage of the fixed rate.

There are many homeowners that piggyback their mortgages when they are buying. They end up with one mortgage for 80% of the value of the home and a second mortgage for 10%. They put the remaining 10% down on the home. Since the first mortgage is only for 80% of the purchase price, they avoid having to pay PMI.

Many piggybackers have a line of credit as the second loan. Others simply want to consolidate into one loan that would be easier to keep track of. Either way, refinancing into a fixed-rate isn’t a bad idea. And one payment is easier to make on time each month than two.

Those out there with adjustable-rate mortgages are starting to get a little nervous. Interest rates have been rising pretty fast. The gap between the rate of a adjustable mortgage and a fixed mortgage has narrowed so much that you really don’t save much by taking the adjustable mortgage. Many are looking to avoid rising interest rates by financing to fixed-rate mortgages.

Refinancing can be a good thing. You can get a fixed rate to counter the rising interest rates. You can use cash from a refinancing to consolidate your debt. You can improve your home. But you should be careful about taking too much equity out of your home.

Many advisors warn consumers not to use their homes as personal piggy banks. If home prices decline, you could owe more than your house would sell for. In a cooling, or slowing, real estate market, you do not want to be maxed out on the equity in your home. If something happened and you had to sell, you want to walk away from the closing table with money, not have to go to it with a check. Paying to sell your home isn’t how you want to do it.

Fixed-rate mortgages are always a good and solid financial choice. Anytime you are looking to refinance, your best option is to go with the shortest-term, fixed-rate mortgage you can afford.

Internet Pitfalls And Pinnacles II

With the frenzy over doing everything via the variations on internet access, it would appear that some people have lost track of what is appropriate, and what is not appropriate for internet distribution. Though it is possible to use many different kinds of tools via an internet connection, there are certain things that should remain off line and protected from the scrutiny of the world wide web, and the problems associated when access to this information stream is unavailable. As business moves to create the next surge of web based applications and access, leaders should be reminded of several serious drawbacks associated with certain types of information exchange and storage being promoted as desirable to the under informed.

The internet is a source of extremely open and fast communications, making it wonderful for many types of business applications to transfer information. Yet, it is because of this open access that certain types of information should be protected from being injected into this stream. Here is a list of items to consider that may not be best to use the internet to accomplish.

1. Vital business information – When businesses transfer their vital business information to be controlled and managed by remote servers of internet service providers, there are risks of losing access to the information during periods of server down time, or changes to provider services. An enterprise may run serious risks of not being able to conduct vital operations if they cannot access and maintain online data. Other risks that have recently been in the news involves large banks of customer information being hijacked by hackers who access internet systems that were thought to be secure. Though the transmission of vital business information has become commonplace on the web, cutting a business off from control over that information by shunting it to an internet deployment offers far greater risks of crippling contingencies not found by using internal data storage systems not connected with internet access.

2. Virtual hard disk storage – There are companies offering customers the opportunity to use an internet based information storage system that stores all the data that can be found on a PC hard drive. By using an internet server as a “hard drive” all the information that would otherwise be managed on a physical disk can be scrutinized, manipulated, and disconnected from the control of system users. No matter how good it sounds to use the internet for personal data storage, the risks of exposure, loss, and unauthorized access to sensitive personal information rise astronomically when no longer self contained on a secure machine.

3. Personal information “programs” – Many people do not think twice about using an internet based calendar or planning tool to record, access, communicate, and store their personal organization and contact information. When people use internet based tools like these instead of desktop applications, the risks of having unscrupulous access to the information, and misuse of the data in a wide variety of ways can become a serious breach of privacy for the sake of “convenience.” It is far more secure to use desktop software applications for storing sensitive personal information.

As a general rule, any information that a person or business does not feel comfortable with offering for open access should not be stored permanently on an intranet or internet based server system. Using email document transfer, or instant messaging to transfer information between businesses and individuals carries enough risks in themselves to warrant due caution. The insidious proliferation of freely available internet based applications to replace the purchase of secure desktop programs is the incentive for people to avoid purchasing software that should be kept on a PC instead of handed over to the web.

Before diving into the internet revolution with both feet, make sure the use of these convenient applications is not the equivalent of cutting your feet off at the ankles. One should consider more than mere convenience in deciding to lose personal control over vital information. It is not enough to select what information goes into these applications. An informed user should also take the time to consider the consequences of losing control over the software package that stores the information of choice.

Connecting PR to SEO for a Complete Strategy

PR without SEO may soon mean no PR at all. A front-page story in a major newspaper might boost your ego, but a top 10 Google ranking will boost your business; if you have any doubt read on…

The Wall Street Journal is the world’s most-esteemed and widely read business publication. With about two million readers, what could be better than getting your company on its front page? Before you answer, consider this:

Yahoo!® News has almost 25 million subscribers;
Google News has more than seven million subscribers;
33 million Americans use search engines every day; and
Google estimates it receives more than 10 billion business searches per year.

At staggering heights now, the popularity of search engines keeps climbing. News aggregator site MSN® Newsbot, now in Beta, figures to capture a hefty audience, despite its late entry. To filter the massive information output of business blogs, new types of engines are popping up all over. Google Blog Search, only in Beta, already pulls enormous traffic. Ice Rocket, Technorati, Feedster, and Blogdigger are other blog-centric engines delivering information to news-hungry audiences.

Even journalists have become search engine junkies: a whopping 98 percent look at search engines daily, scouring them for article research, new sources, blog postings and press releases.

Conclusion: your PR message will rarely and barely be heard unless you optimize it for the search engines. Here is how:

Find an SEO partner to help you analyze potential keywords and key phrases. Selecting the right ones for your Web site content and press releases will make or break you when your audience is searching;
Write press releases fully optimized for search engines. Since this requires a completely different style from that used for print media, professional copywriting assistance may be helpful;
As you and your SEO partner develop a linking strategy for your Web site, make sure it includes measures that drive traffic to your PR pages;
Build an article bank for your Web site. Besides providing customers with useful information about your company and industry, article postings give your site the fresh content that search engines crave; and
Speaking of fresh content, consider launching a blog. Blogs have the power to reshape attitudes like no other news medium can. Microsoft and GM are two well-known examples of how blogging turned around very negative customer perception. Search engines reward blogs because of their frequent content updates; connecting a blog to your main site will lift its rankings.

Even small companies can attract a wide audience by orienting their PR to search engines. Thomas Mahon, a struggling but passionate Savile Road tailor, grew his business to unheard of levels with a blog, The English Cut, and by cultivating on-line news sources. Companies no longer need huge PR budgets and cozy relationships with newspaper editors to get noticed. All it takes is an appealing, honest story and expert SEO.

911 Faqs And More Questions

The number 911 has been in the news quite frequently in the last couple of years.

911 is the emergency number dialed by people when they need fire, police or ambulance assistance in a hurry. In the year 911 the Lower Seine area was ceded to the Norse invaders under Hrolf Ranger as the Duchy of Normandy (treaty of St Claire sur Epte).

Anastasius III became Pope from 911-913.

The Danes started the towv of Drogheda in Ireland.

9 11 also stands for the horrendous attack by terrorists on New York City and the Pentagon in which thousands of people were murdered.

Here are some pertinent questions that to this day still have not been answered:

Why did the FBI stop their investigation in Mid 1996 of two of Osama bin Laden’s relatives in Washington and a Muslim organisation, the World Assembly of Muslim Youth?

Was it because they had orders from higher up to stop any investigations related to the Bin Laden Family?

Why did George W.Bush give the order to stop inquiries into the terrorist connections of the Bin Laden family based in the US and abroad in early 2001?

Why did the US Government allow all the Bin Laden Family members to fly out of the US while all other air-Traffic was grounded? Was it because the Bin Laden family has been funding the Bush family politically for a long time?

Why did none of the 19 hijackers appear on the passenger lists involved in the 4 hijjacked planes? Can you explain, why none of the indestructible Black Boxes have been found at any of the crash centers? When was the last time George H.W. Bush travelled to the Middle East on behalf of the privately owned Carlyle Group, one of the largest defense contractors in the U.S. and what was the purpose of that meeting? If we knew that there was a terrorist attack going on, which we did, and we suddenly have two trade towers in New York being obviously hit by terrorist activity, and we also knew of commercial airliners changing course from Boston to Los Angeles, then where was the response of the defense establishment once we saw the diversion of the aircraft headed west from Dulles turning around 180 degrees and, likewise, in the aircraft taking off from Newark and, in flight, turning 180 degrees?

Answer:

Commenting from CNN on the timeline, 9:03 is the correct time that the United Airlines flight crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center; 9:43 is the time that American Airlines flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. And 10:10 a.m. is the time that United Airlines flight 93 crashed in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

Discrepancies between Joint Chiefs of Staff investigations and findings of the 9/11 commission:

There was a highly classified United States Special Operations Command program under the command of the U.S. Special Operations Command .It was created as a result of a directive from the Joint Chiefs’ of Staff in early October 1999 by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Hugh Shelton ,to develop an Information Operations Campaign Plan against transnational terrorism, “specifically al-Qaida.” According to statements by Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer and confirmed by four others, Able Danger had identified the September 11, 2001 attack leader Mohamed Atta , and three of the 9/11 plot’s 19 hijackers, as possible members of an al Qaeda cell linked to the ‘93 World Trade Center Attacks.

The group used all information legally collected under the rule of law. Primarily consisting of classified information, all publicly obtained information was approved after a legal review of SOCOM lawyers. The early identification of the four hijackers by Able Danger appears to contradict the official conclusion of the 9/11 Commission,that American intelligence agencies had not identified Atta as a terrorist prior to the attack. This has resulted in a political controversy that has begun to damage the credibility of the bipartisan 9/11 Commission.

J Shipper is very interested in politics and the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America.

Bhutanese Refugees in Nepal

This has made Bhutan one of the highest per capita refugee generators in the world due to the implementation of the “Driglam Namzha” (Cultural Code of the Ruling Elite) with a “One Nation, One People” policy which imposed the language, dress code, and customs of the northern Bhutanese on the entire population. The crackdown on the southern Bhutanese continued as the government began closing schools and hospitals in an attempt to force out those of Nepali origin.

Often the countries most overburdened with refugees are already among the poorest in the world. Nepal continues to be ranked as one of the poorest countries in the world in terms of human development yet hosts more than 100,000 Bhutanese and 20,000 Tibetan refugees. Nepals inadequate social and physical infrastructural services are overstrained by such an
influx of refugees.

There are seven camps with a population of 101,000 refugees, about half of whom are located in Beldangi camp. The camps are situated on the plains of east Nepal, spanning two districts (Jhapa and Morang) which are the most heavily populated in Nepal.

To get to the refugee camps, one has to drive on winding dirt roads through fields or forested land for at least half an hour. The forest clears out all of sudden and distinct rows of huts appear in the clearing. It seems as if you have come upon a civilization long hidden from the rest of the world.

In the seven camps there are 45 schools, 40,000 pupils and 956 teachers. The
student/teacher ratio is an average 40:1 but in reality the classes are much bigger than this as the number of teachers includes headmasters and teacher trainers which are given very few periods, if any at all.

A school environment provides more than just basic needs to read and write, but also provides an outlet for children to experience a sense of normality, safety and routine after many years upheaval.

Most of the classrooms are temporary structures (often made of a mixture of brick, bamboo and grass) due to the limited life-span of the camps. Many of the lower classes do not have desks and the children are sitting on jute mats which have been manufactured in the camps during the income generating activities initiated by Oxfam. However, all classrooms are provided with a table and chair for the teacher. The blackboards are portable with an easel.

What is a Fresnel Lens?

Over the past 25 years I have had the unique opportunity to talk directly with many of the professionals and instructors who use Overhead Projectors as an integral part of their profession. Through these interactions I have accumulated notes and information that has inspired me to write these articles that pertain to some of the most common problems experienced by owners of today’s and yesterday’s Overhead Projectors. This is the seventh article in a series of
articles that will be written from a professional Electronics Technicians point of view in regards to some of today’s most common Overhead Projector problems and questions.

What is a Fresnel Lens?

If you have ever looked at the lens of your Overhead Projector (the lens that sits under the glass where you lay your transparencies) you may be reminded of a magnifying glass. And in some ways you are right. The idea of the Fresnel Lens in your Overhead Projector is to focus the beam of light produced by the projection lamp, projecting it to the optics in the head assembly and on to your wall or screen. Unlike a conventional magnifying lens that is thick in the middle and tapers down to nothing at the edges, the Fresnel lens is a single thickness all the way across.

This thin piece of plastic magnifiying lens found in your Overhead Projector is called a Fresnel Lens. It is flat on one side and ridged on the other. In most cases there are two pieces of this thin acrylic lens placed together often referred to as a dual element Fresnel Lens.
Fresnel lenses were first used to focus the beam of light in lighthouse lamps. These plastic lenses are used where a concentrated light is required. The Fresnel lens serves the same purpose in your Overhead Projector where a concentrated beam of light is required to project your image on to a screen or wall.

How do I clean my Fresnel Lens?

The typical overhead projector has a top piece of glass (stage glass) and just below that is a plastic lens with lots of circular lines on it (the Fresnel lens). Most Fresnel Lenses are marked on one side indicating which side goes toward the lamp. If you know how to remove it, just take it out and reinstall it the correct way. You should never use glass cleaner on the Fresnel Lens,it can destroy the plastic lens. To clean your Fresnel Lens a soft cloth dampened with water or cleaner approved by the manufacturer should be used. A word of caution here: handle the Fresnel lens with care to avoid scratches or other types of damage,this lens is a very expensive part of your Overhead Projector.

After you re-install the Fresnel Lens and you suddenly get a blurry round spot instead of a clear image from your Overhead Projector, you will find that the Fresnel Lens is probably installed upside down. No need to panic, simply remove the lens and re-install the correct way. This is a common problem for those who have removed this lens while cleaning the dust out of their Overhead Projector.

Where can I purchase a new Fresnel Lens?

Fresnel Lenses can be purchased from the manufacturer or from an authorized parts distributor.
