Team Building-the All Inclusive Way

More and more people are booking “all inclusive” holidays. These are the ones that have all meals and (usually locally produced) drinks included in the base price of the holiday. Providing the food is appetising and (for me) the beer is drinkable, they do just fine.

Flicking through a travel brochure the other day, I got to thinking what other commercially available offerings could be all inclusive. I decided that team building is certainly one.

“What’s new?” I hear you ask. “I’ve never had to pay for my drinks or food on a corporate away day.” Well, food and drink are not the only – or even most important – resources at an away day or conference. The people are.

So how does the term “all inclusive” apply to the team members themselves? It’s easy – think about it. They all need to be included in the activity. Sounds simple, yet I’d wager that most team building days don’t follow this simple piece of advice.

What does the term “team building” bring to mind for you? Whether they enjoy them or not, most people think of quad-biking, abseiling, orienteering or some other outdoor activity. These are activities that appeal to a certain type of person but not all. As and when a manager chooses such an option, he or she is probably forcing some members of the team to go against their wishes – or feign illness on the day. Those diligent enough not to “pull a sickie” are more likely to dislike – and perhaps even hate – every minute of the day.

So what is the answer? Select an option that meets the lowest common denominator? Choose a tea party with charades? No – this has exactly the same problem at the other end of the scale. The more extrovert, adrenaline junkies will savour this kind of activity every bit as much as their less physically-inclined colleagues would enjoy jumping off a cliff.

Does this mean that team building days are doomed to mediocrity? Selecting something that offends the least rather than inspires the most?

No. You can choose an “all inclusive” option. And these tend to have more parallels back in the workplace as well, making real team development more likely.

An all inclusive activity is one that has a core challenge or task that is ongoing throughout the session. This core challenge will contain the overall goal of the group, or teams within the group if it is a competitive activity. It will be something that everyone can either do or play a part in. Ideally it will also be something that people will most likely enjoy, although it is not essential that everyone does enjoy it.

Parallel to the main challenge should be ancillary challenges that are optional and wide-ranging. These tasks should make sense within the overall context of the main challenge. That is, people will not wonder what relevance they have to meeting their overall goal or feel that the link is unrealistically tenuous.

Chosen well, these discrete yet integrated challenges are what make a team building session all inclusive. Include some that will appeal to those who like a physical challenge and the adrenaline junkies will be happy and involved. Include some construction tasks and the engineering-inclined will be ecstatic. Include some more cerebral tasks and those who enjoy using their grey matter will be in their element.

Make each of these ancillary challenges optional and people can choose their own idea of fun for the day and genuinely contribute to their team’s achievement. Everyone will leave happy and the opportunity is there to highlight the similarities to the workplace and identify real team improvements.

The best teams have people within them with a mix of interests and skill sets. Their effectiveness is determined by how these different skills are used within a team context to maximise the outputs of the team. Different people using different skills in parallel. An all inclusive team building session is simply one that mirrors real life.

Transferring iPod Video from iPod to PC

You will not find many complaints from iPod owners and users. However, one matter frequently mentioned is the inability to transfer video and audio files from their iPod to an additional PC Though the iPod has no issues transmitting files from your desktop computer to iPod from iTunes, the opposite is prohibited. If you do not have iPod Transfer Software, you will not be able to copy your iPod information to another computer. This issue sometimes occurs when iPodders get a new computer or have to restart the operating system on their current PC. Apple forbids this action because it doesn’t want unauthorised sharing of purchased files from the iTunes website. Even So, there are a lot reasonable circumstances that iPodders necessitate the ability to copy from iPod to personal computer. If a computer goes kaput and you need to install Windows, you could need iPod to Computer copy software to retrieve your valuable music. Otherwise, the fresh installment of iTunes will erase your iPod, possibly costing you $100’s of dollars in unrecoverable files. An additional common scenario individuals necessitate these types of software is when they get a new computer and wish to move their existing database of iPod content on the new machine. Once More, without this type of application, you could possibly lose your valuable music. There are many companies on the marketplace today that offer software applications to execute this job. A fast visit to software download sites will reveal a handful of choices. You can also just type in ‘iPod to PC copy software’ into your favorite search engine.

To Finance or Not to Finance New? Your Credit is the Question

- You’re finally ready. You need a new car and are going to go for that sports car you’ve always wanted. You need a loan but have an excellent paying job and should be able to afford the payments, you think. You get a copy of your credit report and then it hits – your credit score is pretty low. The only loans you can get approved for, to get your hands on your $30,000 prize, have interest rates so high your monthly payments would be astronomical. You can’t even get a new economy car at the rates lenders will approve you for. A used car is looking like your only alternative. –

It happens all the time. Consumers can often forget just how important good credit is to obtaining an auto loan with affordable rates.

Unless they have cash on-hand to make a purchase, many consumers set their sights too high when they plan to finance a new vehicle. Once a potential lender checks their credit, reality sets in.

If your credit is bad, a new vehicle may not be in your immediate future. With new vehicles typically ranging from $13,000 and up, the monthly payments on a 5 or 6 year loan may be significantly more expensive if you have a low credit score. A moderately priced used vehicle may be your only alternative for the time being.

Your interest rate will still be high, but your payments shouldn’t be quite as bad since you aren’t financing as much money. The more payments you make on your high interest loan on time, the better your credit score may be. After a year you may even qualify for refinancing at cheaper rates.

If you want to finance a new vehicle and have bad credit, you’re going to have to spend months or even years rebuilding your credit before you’ll be able to afford new. In the meantime, there’s plenty of quality used vehicles available that may fit within your budget.

Bathroom Remodeling – You Can Do That

After purchasing an investment home it became clear that we needed to remodel the bathroom. We wanted to change the layout which included relocating the plumbing and fixtures. We plan on living in this house until we sell it so we wanted to feel comfortable while conducting our daily personal hygiene plus remodeling the bathroom makes good financial sense for when we go to sell the property later. We plan on installing high-quality products in a bathroom which should provide a high return on our investment.

After giving it some thought I came to realize that one of the biggest obstacles would be to relocate the doorway, so after several designs I was able to move the doorway over a couple of feet to accommodate the new design.

To help you in planning your new bathroom design I will provide a list of things to consider before you start tearing out walls and fixtures.

As mentioned before make sure that you are able to relocate the doorway, if necessary.
Make sure that you understand all structural issues and that all changes will meet your city or county codes. There are very strict codes on removing, drilling or notching load bearing walls and floor joist. If your bathroom is built on a concrete slab that rests directly on soil, many of these issues will not apply, just remove the slab and place piping wherever you need to.

All jobs are different, so I’ve listed below what you can expect the job will take in time:

* Demolition – Two Days

* Carpentry Modifications – One Day

* Plumbing – Two Days

* Electrical Work – One Day

* Insulation and Hang Drywall – One Day

* Finish Drywall – Two Days

* Install tile on Walls and Floors and Grout – Three Days

* Install Cabinets, Tops, Toilet, Faucet – Two Days

* Painting and Wallpapering – Two Days

* Miscellaneous Activities – Two Days

When I remodeled my bathroom it was out of service for about 18 to 20 days. So plan well to lessen the down time.

Below is a list of things to consider to help speed up the process.

* Stage all of the materials at your home before the job starts.

* Make sure every item is free of defects, the right size and you have every single piece of material you need.

* You can save a day or two off the drywall phase if you use rapid-setting joint compound, and tape the drywall seams directly after the drywall is fastened to the walls and ceilings.

* Be sure to arrange all of the temporary arrangements so you can still live in your home as the remodeling work progresses. Consider setting up temporary showers in basements or garages or ask a relative to borrow theirs for a few days.

* Toilet facilities can be a major concern, in many smaller homes there is only one toilet in the entire house. If this is the case, you may have to order a portable toilet that can sit outside.

* Make sure that you know how to operate the primary water shut-off valve in your home and that it works. If you see a leak, shut off the water immediately to prevent major water damage.

Remodeling a bathroom will seem like an impossible task but trust me if you plan well and hire specialist to do things you can not there is no reason why you should not succeed. I managed to remodel mine and saved a boat load of money by doing so. With the addition of my new bathroom we can expect an increase of $5,000 to $10,000 in increased home value. Good luck with your project.

Cholesterol In Review

As someone who is affected personally with the task of lowering my own cholesterol levels, I would like to share some of the steps you can take to decrease your bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol.

I have a B.S. in Biological Science with a minor in Human Physiology. Although I offer educated information and research, the information in this article should not be used in substitute for a doctor’s recommendation, and is not intended to cure any disease.

Cholesterol travels through the blood attached to a protein. This cholesterol-protein package is called a lipoprotein. Lipoproteins are either high density or low density, depending on how much protein they have in relation to fat. Lipoproteins with more protein than fat are called high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Lipoproteins with more fat than protein are called low-density lipoproteins (LDL).

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol is sometimes called “good” cholesterol. HDL cholesterol helps remove LDL cholesterol from the body by binding with it in the bloodstream and carrying it back to the liver for disposal. A high level of HDL cholesterol appears to lower your risk of developing heart disease and stroke.

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is sometimes called “bad” cholesterol. LDL cholesterol collects inside the walls of the arteries and often contributes to the formation of plaque. LDL cholesterol is calculated from the total cholesterol, HDL, and triglyceride levels.

A high LDL cholesterol level is considered a risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) because, under certain conditions, it can cause hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis).Cholesterol is measured either in milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg/dL) or in millimoles per liter of blood (mmol/L).An LDL cholesterol level of less than 100 mg/dL (less than 2.6 mmol/L) is considered optimal.100 to 129 (2.6 to 3.35) is considered near optimal. 130 to 158 (3.35 to 4.10) is considered borderline high.160 to 189 (4.12 to 4.88) is considered high.190 and above (4.90 to 4.88) is considered very high.(Retrieved from http://health.msn.com/encyclopedia/medicaltests/articlepage.aspx%5C?cp-documentid=100066732)

With this in mind there are factors that work against lowering LDL “bad” cholesterol:
1. Your family history can play into your cholesterol equation (Asia Africa Intelligence Wire, June 11,2005). Since high cholesterol runs in my family I have genetics working against me as well.
2. Stress may lead to an increase in blood cholesterol (Pharma Marketletter, Dec 12, 2005)
3. Smoking may raise LDL cholesterol (http://www.indiana.edu, March 15, 2006)
4. Foods with Saturated fat can raise LDL cholesterol (Retrieved from http://www.indiana.edu, March 15, 2006)

Factors that can lower LDL “bad” cholesterol
1. Exercise raises HDL cholesterol and lowers LDL cholesterol
2. Reduce the stress in your life
3. Stop smoking
4. A high-fiber diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fish (but low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol) improves cholesterol levels

Most of what I have listed should be of no surprise to you. However, there are two more options to reducing your cholesterol levels. The first one is to take prescription drugs for lowering cholesterol. I have heard of good results with this method to drastically lower cholesterol. Although this method seems effective it is not without a price. For example, my brother and both of my parents have tried a couple of different prescription drugs for cholesterol discovering side effects. Their cholesterol was lowered significantly but they had unbearable muscle and joint pain while taking the medication. These side effects lead me to looking for alternative health products.

I found that there are a number of naturally based health products that significantly lower cholesterol. I have personally tried a couple of products and have not experienced any side effects like my family members. I can say that I have been able to successfully avoid the prescription drugs at this time, and I am hoping to maintain my current good status by eating right, exercising and supplementing with natural health products.

I am finding that I will either need to continue supplementing naturally or take prescription drugs for lowering cholesterol since my family history is playing a major factor in my high cholesterol levels.

Tips For An Easy Card Processing

Most businesses conduct their transactions with the help of credit cards. Moreover, personal transactions could also be carried out through the use of credit cards. Credit card has become very essential for shoppers since it eliminates the need to carry a large amount of cash. It gives convenience both to the customer and the seller because transactions can be done any time you want it. It helps in managing your money easier and can be especially used during emergencies.

Using credit cards on online transactions boost your business profit against your competitor.

Here are the three key elements needed for credit card processing:

1. Payment gateway – combination of secure software and hardware that transmits payment information from customer to merchant, provides interface, credit card processing, billing, reporting and operational services.

2. Internet merchant account-relationship between a retailing company and a merchant bank which gives authorization to collect funds from customer’s credit card account.

3. Bank account-an account or account number that holds funds from which they can make withdrawals.

The key to online sales is accepting credit cards but unfortunately, most internet merchant accounts can be harder to achieved because of increased security risks as to no signatures attached, and nor the card is physically presented on the point of sale. In some ways it could also be crucial for businesses because of the occurrence of credit card fraud and attack of credit card thieves.

So you must have a secure, confidential and protected way of dealing credit card information.

The easiest and safest way to implement an online credit card processing is using a third-party service which is a payment gateway at the same time a merchant account. Lots of third-party service or software is offered in the market today and appropriate for all types of businesses. It also incorporates a payment gateway and a merchant account. And many of these services also incorporate a shopping cart application as part of the deal. It may appear to cost more but it saves you from an initial outlay on shopping cart applications and expensive long time contracts.

When choosing a third-party service for credit card payments, consider the volume and frequency of your sales. There are also other third-party credit card processing services available, all of which have slightly different pricing schemes. The right one for you will depend on your sales volume and cash flow.

Buying Binoculars

Buying binoculars for any purpose requires a bit of research before you can assume your choice is best suited for your purpose. Your best bet for performance and durability is with the leading manufacturers ,such as Nikon, Bushnell, Zeiss, Leupold, etc. These companies offer products that feature quality precision optics and sturdy construction.

But knowing brand names is no guarantee that you will find the binoculars most suited to your purposes. You should acquaint yourself with a few basics before making a choice.

For instance, prism binoculars tend offer a wider field of view. Do not worry about needless details regarding optics because knowing the advantages and disadvantages of prisms should be enough.

There are two types of prisms – roof and porro – each with their own special characteristics:

•Roof prisms generally provide durability, compactness, lighter weight and finer focus than porro prisms.

•Porro prisms offer bright imagery, sharper close focus and wider field of view than roof prisms but porro prisms are heavier and require larger housings than roof prisms.

On the subject of optics, you should be aware that lower magnification binoculars offer better light transmission meaning better performance in low light conditions. The reverse is true for higher magnification which allows less light to reach the eye.

The viewing capability of a binocular is measured in magnification power and millimeters. For instance, a 7 x 35 binocular means the instrument will magnify a viewed object by seven times and the number 35 relates to the front lens diameter (35 millimeters).

The next step after deciding what type of optics would best suit your purpose is comfort and handling when using your binoculars.

•Do they fit well in your hands?

•When looking through the binocular, is there a comfortable distance between your eyes and the eyepiece lenses?

•Is the entire visual field in sharp focus with no discernable distortion?

    •Are colors clear and realistic?

•If important to your use, test the binoculars in low light conditions. The images should be bright and clear.

•Fold-down rubber eye cups are a necessity for eyeglass wearers.

•Do the binoculars feature a locking system that will retain the users visual acuity adjustments, avoiding a refocusing with each use?

Last but certainly far from least would be cost. Binoculars range in price from a few dollars for use by children to well over one thousand dollars for top-quality instruments.

Shopping around at stores and on the Internet for discount outlets and special sales will save you money but high-quality binoculars will not be cheap. Well-manufactured binoculars can last a lifetime. They will feature higher-grade optical glass in prisms and lenses for overall viewing excellence and a durable housing.

The old adage “You get what you pay for” rings true when buying a good pair of binoculars.

Okay Let’s Do A Poodle Again

My wife and I have been married for 32 years. In that time our pets, more commonly known to us as dogs, have taken a large part of that shared life together. It is no secret that these sometimes small friends are able to take the sting out of loneliness, the hurt out of bad relationships, or in our case, add happiness to an already happy time.

The first dog we had was a mix of german shepherd and black lab. The dog was a female, with mostly black, and some brown. We called her “Berny”, after her long name of Bernecia Bernard the first. My wife had picked her up when we first decided to tie the knot. She showed me this small puppy when we met the next day after she received her. I was glad, for I did like dogs.

It wasn’t long before I moved to another city some twenty miles away and took the small dog with me. A short time later, we were married and started our new life together. It was sheer h___, the first six months of our marriage. Two strong personalities that had trouble getting along. But, eventually we learned as other couples do. That is,that those differences when you were first married , you know the ones. Those things in each other you simply could not put up with, well after time and years, along with age; you decide that those things were not as bad as you thought. You simply stop fighting and started enjoying each other.
It was during those times of the early years this german shepherd mix would be the friend to both of us. She was trained to go ask to go out, well trained to sit and stay, and a number of other commands. After awhile, it seemed the dog could just understand us as we spoke to her. We had her some 12 years, before she died. We missed her terribly. A good friend had left us. One we loved very much. A tear still fondly fills my eye as I recall this.

It was this shortage of dog power around, that led us to get our next dog. This one lasted fifteen years. A registered toy poodle named “Lady Cocoa Puff Bon Bon”. She was a fiesty chocolate color, with spit and vinegar in her spirit. We loved her from the start. She too became potty trained and with Berny, could almost seem to know what we wanted just by our talking to her. She, though, unlike our other dog, was stubborn at times. If she wanted to go with you and you left her home, be prepared to find her leaving a mess of torn up paper and anything else she could get ahold of. As she grew older, her sight went bad, she could not move well. In the end, she left us as well. I chuckle now, thinking of this small spitfire.
We have had two dogs, some 27 of the 32 years of marriage. We never got another dog, as of yet. We keep looking, but with already having two of the finest dogs ever put on Gods earth, it is hard to think we could find another one as loyal, loving, and of independent character as the two we have had.

In all, we decided to, if we get another, “lets do a poodle again”…
