Avid bird watching enthusiasts often look like pack mules hiking to a gold rush in the west. Bird watching binoculars are one of the critical pieces of equipment they carry.

There are a lot of issues when it comes to choosing binoculars for bird watching. Optics and personal preference seem to be the foremost, but here is a list of issues you should consider.

Bashability

Bashability isn’t really a word in the English language, but it certainly applies to bird watching. The bashability of binoculars refers to how tough they are. For instance, if you drop them on the driveway while loading the car, will they hold up? What if you drop them off a small cliff? I, err…”a friend” once did this on the cliffs above Torrey Pines beach in San Diego. More than a few people have been surprised to learn that binoculars go out of whack when bashed. Now, I realize you would never drop them or subject them to anything but the finest treatment, but just check them for me.

Costs

I like wine. I drink wine. Unless I am standing at the cash register, I can’t really tell the difference between a $10 bottle of wine and one selling for $100. Bird watching binoculars seem to run along the same lines.

You can buy bird watching binoculars for as much as $1,000. Heck, Victoria’s Secret or Neiman Marcus probably have diamond encrusted ones for $100,000. Do you need to spend this money? No. My personal experience has revealed binoculars in the $200 to $400 range perform well and I’ve never missed a sighting because of their quality.

Obviously, you can spend whatever you wish, but keep in mind you don’t have to go overboard. Plus, binoculars without diamonds tend to still be on the beach once you make it down from the cliff.

Feel

This may sound obvious, but you need to buy binoculars that are comfortable. Ideally, you are going to lug these babies around for 10 or 20 years. Make sure they “fit” your face and spacing of your eyes. Also, make sure they don’t weigh too much. After a few hours of birding, this can become an issue.

If you’re going to be a birder, you’re going to need binoculars. Like wine, you can go overboard on them, but don’t need to.

Besides small pairs, one of the hands most commonly misplaced in poker often seems to be the suited ace. There’s something about seeing those matched suits together with the big dog of all cards that causing dreams of flushing and making the monster flush that takes down a huge pot, but in reality, this kind of thinking is often just another poker pipe dream.

One of the main way poker players get in trouble playing ace x suited for a raise, is that they then get trapped into a bigger pot when they hit the four flush on the flop and go chasing after the fifth suited card, putting money in on a hand that is (a) against the odds to happen and (b) probably not going to get paid off much when it does.

The odds of hitting a flush with four to it on the flop are roughly 1 in 3, a stat that does down further when you miss on the turn and still want to see the river. Playing against any pair makes you the dog, and so it’s better, unless you are in a gambling mood, to avoid this prospect completely except when it is cheap (ie: limping) to see the flop, or if you can otherwise take control of the board by taking the lead, thus negating the need to make your hand in the first place.

The other drawback here is that even when you do make your flush, unless your opponent happens to also be drawing, it’s dead on easy for even novice players to see that the flush is out there. Thus, a lot of the times made flushes don’t get paid a lot unless the money goes in before the flush card comes, which as noted before, means you are putting in money from behind.

Again, the poker advice: don’t draw against the odds, make you opponent be the one to do that, is solid, winning poker advice.

It’s easy to be tempted to call raises with that a/x suited, but in the long run, if you can avoid doing so, it will likely end up saving you more money than it brings in.

The next round of direct diplomatic negotiations between Mehmet Ali Talat, the Turkish Cypriot leader, and his Greek Cypriot counterpart, Demetris Christofias, begins today. The first meeting, which occurred on the third of this month, was met with optimism by commentators and journalists, and the leaders themselves seemed in high spirits immediately following the meeting. It is becoming more and more apparent that the current push toward reunification offers the best chance yet of mending the divide that has split the island’s two communities since 1974. Under the five year incumbent Tassos Papadopoulos attitudes toward reunification of the island were far less sunny.

Papadopoulos was fervently against reunification attempts, and his public rejection of the Annan plan back in 2004 was doubtless one of the key reasons why the Greek Cypriot side of the island voted against it. However, the Turkish side accepted the plan in roughly the same proportion as it was rejected in the south. The EU honoured the Turkish vote by attempting to instigate direct trade between the North and the rest of the EU, a trade route which has been suspended since the ECJ ruling of 1994.

The green line mechanism, which allows the north to export goods to the south, was as close as the EU could honour their commitment to the Turkish side. This concession, even if it is not, thanks to Cyprus’s EU membership, exactly what was promised, helped open up the once solid border between the North and South. With Turkey looking for EU membership it is likely that the step toward reunification will continue unbroken. Cyprus, which is already an EU member and which has already scuppered widely supported resolutions that would have ended the economic isolation of the North, has let Ankara know that they will reserve their right of veto for the next round of membership talks. This means that Turkish involvement in the current round of negotiations will be highly scrutinised, and will need to be pro-active and positive if they stand any chance of being successful in their membership attempts.

Also, unlike Papadopoulos, Christofias has been very public about his desire to reunify the island. In fact, reunification was a key topic on which he ran for leadership, and his personal and professional relationship with Talat – they met five times this year before direct negotiations even began – shows that he is as good as his word. Reunification is most definite now a question of when, not if. What this means is that the North, where prices are at the moment low due to its international isolation (especially on trade) and lack of direct international flights, represents what is probably the most rousing property investment opportunity in Europe right now.

Property prices in North Cyprus are currently between half and a third the price of those in the south, despite the fact that the North enjoys the pick of the island’s natural beauty and shares in the same fantastic Mediterranean climate as the south.

I have been looking for an opportunity to make quick money online, but I am not sure which of the many programs are for real and not scams. I am looking to find a website that evaluates all of these programs and tells me which ones are worth trying and which ones are just scams to get your money. I am not sure if such a website exists, but if anyone knows of one I would love to hear about it. Also, I would love to hear about legitimate opportunities for making money on the internet since I need to start some kind of work from home.

I am really interested in finding a good way to make money from home using the internet. I stay home with the kids, and we could always use more money, so it would be nice if I could make quick money online. I recently came across and ad for the IPC program for making money online, and I am wondering if anyone has tried it. I would love to hear more about it, and whether it is easy to use it to make money from home. I know that a lot of times these programs are not necessarily as easy as they sound.

We all enjoy going to futuristic movies, which have all sorts of very cool technologies in these feature films for the Big Screen. We love to watch our favorite actors get into future type vehicles and drive away; cool beans indeed. Well the idea of a futuristic wind-powered car is certainly getting a little bit of boost from mainstream media and Hollywood these days and perhaps they have been reading our online think. One reporter from the UK asks;

“Do you see Wind Cars being used in the future?”

Indeed, I can envision them in many forms, although somewhat do not see them as a current practical alternative to the reciprocating combustion engine due to modern gasoline engines and their immediate performance and quick to power band abilities.

But it makes sense that the Wind Car is a possibility and an alternative, which will indeed challenge the minds of the greatest innovators if they choose to accept the mission. You see anyone can waste energy that take no brains at all. Using energy wisely is smart and takes more mental faculties and indeed those greatest intellectual competing minds will take up the greatest challenges, as that is an innate characteristic of competition and the human species.
