Cintron Starts Training At Historic Ali Camp

Cintron Starts Training At Historic Ali Camp
by: Jeff Julian on June 20, 2004

Welterweight contender Kermit “The Killer” Cintron started his training camp on June 14th at the site of Muhammad Ali’s former training camp at Deer Lake, Pennsylvania. For the first time in 23 years, a ring takes center stage in the same rustic gym that saw “The Greatest” work his magic. Once again, the walls echo with the sounds of leather meeting leather and trainers shouting instructions. Cintron becomes the first boxer to use this historic facility since Ali last trained here for his final bout against Trevor Berbick in 1981. “This is what I need – get out of the city and concentrate on boxing, ” commented Cintron. “Nobody bothers me here. The running is harder here, but it’s getting me in great shape. I see what Ali went through in his routine – running 3 to 4 miles – uphill, downhill. There’s a lot of history here and also I can concentrate and relax more.”

Ali started building the camp he called “Fighter’s Heaven” in 1972. Many fans, sportswriters and the just plain curious came here to watch him train. The place was also a magnet for the celebrities of the day. Everyone from Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Elvis Presley to The Jackson Five, Dizzy Gillespie and Andy Warhol came to Deer Lake to call on “The Greatest”. Other fighters who have trained here in the past, some early in their careers as sparring partners to The Champ, included the likes of Larry Holmes, Tim Witherspoon, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad and Earnie Shavers. Cintron’s trainer and co-manager Marshall Kauffman reflected on being here: “Just to know that we’re here at the same spot that Ali trained, where the greatest fighter of all time trained, makes me feel good and helps Kermit to focus. The environment here makes a big difference. This is our first real training camp and to have it here at this historic site – that’s the biggest joy of all.” Joe Pastore, Cintron’s co-manager and strength conditioning coach adds, “This is a good place for relaxation and focus. Box, eat, sleep – train, train, train! If this was good enough for The Greatest, it’s certainly good enough for The Killer.”

Team Cintron is enjoying the solitude and the atmosphere of this fabled place as they prepare for the upcoming HBO televised bout with Teddy Reid on July 17th in Houston. Besides the hours of training and sparring, they are relaxing, playing basketball and enjoying meals at the huge table in the dining hall where so many famous people sat to share a meal and talk with the most famous man on the planet. Something about this modest plot of land on a mountaintop near the coal regions of Pennsylvania intrigued and revitalized Muhammad Ali. It was at Deer Lake that Ali forged the stamina and honed his pugilistic skills to win two of his and the boxing world’s greatest battles in the ring – the “Rumble in the Jungle” against George Foreman and the “Thrilla in Manila” against Joe Frazier. Team Cintron hopes to capture some of that energy and magic. We will have updates and constantly be adding photos from this memorable camp in the “Team Cintron” GALLERY section of this website.

Can Growth Hormone Boosters Enhance Muscle Growth?

Many experts feel that supplementation with growth hormones offers exciting possibilities to adult bodybuilders, especially those aged over thirty. They should not be taken by anyone aged under twenty. In the past growth hormone was available only in injectable form but recent years have seen the development of HGH precursors and more advanced delivery systems. The most popular means of taking growth hormone boosters today include sub-lingual spray, homeopathic pills and capsules containing HGH secretagogues.

That’s all very well, but do these supplements have any place in bodybuilding? To answer this, we’ll need to look first at what growth hormones actually do.

Human Growth Hormone is responsible for the regulation of insulin, protein synthesis, transportation of amino acids across cell membranes and fat metabolism. Clearly, these are processes that are of relevance to serious bodybuilders. Users have reported higher energy levels, enhanced libido and greater cardiac output. In addition, superior immune function, lowering of blood pressure and improved cholesterol levels have been documented. Add in other potential benefits like improved sleep, shorter recovery times, quicker regeneration of damaged muscles and you can begin to understand why some experts are excited by the possibilities offered to bodybuilders.

No adverse side effects have been reported when used as directed but persons aged under twenty should not use growth hormone boosters without consulting a health care professional familiar with HGH therapy.

Bluegills, Trout, Walleyes, and Catfish

BlueGills, The Basics

Bluegills are popular game to go for because they are plentiful across the continent. Another reason they are popular is because they go for a variety of natural bait and artificial bait. They usually opt for areas with clear water and reasonable weed growth.

** Quick Tip: No matter what kind of fish you go for, and no matter what conditions you fish (ice fishing included), the 1947 “Evening Secret” will bring the fish to you, it really is an impressive tool that every fisherman worth his salt should own.

Typically they like water from 50 degrees up to 90, and can even be taken through ice! But, the best time to get them is when the water is around 70 degrees. It is then that they become aggressive because they are ready to spawn. You can find nests from about 2 – 12 feet deep.

When it is warmer, fish early and/or late in the day, especially if you are in shallow water. Bigger bluegills can be found in deeper water, and can be up to 20 feet below the surface. When fishing lily pads, approach it as if you were going for bass. Work the points, pockets and indentations where there is open water.

Make sure to fish with small hooks and bait. They have small mouths and have a hard time taking in larger bait.

Great baits to use are pieces of earthworm, crickets, grasshoppers, grubs, wax worms, minnows, leeches, and even sandwich meat. If you go the artificial route, use tiny jigs and spinner baits.

There isn’t really a need to use more than 2-pound test line – maybe up to 4-pound maximum. As you may know, light lines make the bait appear more lifelike.

They are easily spooked so make longer casts if you are on foot, stay a bit back from the shore. If you are in a boat, be careful and quiet.

After you get a strike, don’t act too quickly. Wait a second before lifting the rod – you will hook more this way.

Walleyes, Use Waders At Night

It is fairly well known that Walleyes favor low-light conditions. They can be found in water only 3-4 feet deep looking for perch. Using a pair of waders you can go for them.

Some recommendations are to use a light spinning rod equipped with 8-12 pound test line, and some minnow imitations.

You can find them at points where deep water is near. Scout for baitfish feeding on plankton – sooner or later the Walleyes will show up.

Trout, Midges

If your luck is not good with early season trout, try a few patterns of midges. Mosquito larva or pupa, in sizes 12-20 is good. If it is early in the season, fish it deep.

Catfish, Bait

Follow these steps to make a bait catfish just can’t resist:

1 pound of chicken livers (including blood)
1 cup of yellow cornmeal
While mixing with hands (squeeze hard), add more cornmeal until a sticky paste forms
Add cotton balls, pulling apart each one and add clumps to mixture (use 12, they keep everything together in the water)
Add more cornmeal until you can make individual balls without them sticking to your hand
Freeze until ready

To bait up, pinch some dough and set it on your hook – catfish will go crazy for this mixture!

Before Purchasing A Gift For A Golfer…Ask Yourself These 3

It should be rather clear to everybody that the gift a golfer will ordinarily appreciate the most, is the one that improves their game. Most golfers are constantly looking for ways to improve on their game. It usually dominates their every thought when they are on the course and many times when they are off it.

Before selecting a gift for a golfer, it is useful to ask yourself the following 3 questions and to get adequate answers for them. Remember that this is a task that is much more complicated than it may seem at first sight.

A) What is their particular golf weakness?
What is the particular weakness of the golfer who you are seeking a gift for? The fact that they have a problem with their golf swing is not goof enough. What particular aspect of the swing? Do they tend to slice the ball or does their swing weakness have to do with a nagging back problem that doctors do not seem able to deal with? This is very important information that you should have long before you even start considering the gift options for a golfer.

B) What are they using currently?
Chances are that the golfer has already taken some action to deal with their weakness. It is important to know what they have done so far because you do not want to get a gift for the golfer that they already have.

C) What do the experts think?
Expert advice always makes a difference. We have golf exercise experts who can be of great help when you are selecting a gift for as golfer. They will be able to advice you on the best way and therefore the best equipment to correct the particular golfer who you purchasing a gift for.

You will be much better off with them than with the shop assistant or store salesperson whose job is to sell as much merchandise as possible. Their golf knowledge is also bound to be limited and even if it is not, it cannot be compared to that of the golf exercise experts. It will certainly help if you seek expert advice before settling on your gift for the golfer you have in mind.

Who Is Our Daddy? – George Steinbrenner, That’s Who.

Who Is Our Daddy? – George Steinbrenner, That’s Who.
Thank goodness the Yankees have him.

Big Daddy, George Steinbrenner, is a Yankee fan’s delight. As a Yankee fan I love that so many other fans hate what George has done and continues to do. He gets the players that he needs. He pushes forward to get another championship for his Yankees. I can visualize George sitting in his office making calls to see if the superstar that he so highly touts is close to signing a Yankee contract.
When the Yankees have been in need of a pitcher they get Roger Clemens, or Mike Mussina, or Catfish Hunter, or Randy Johnson. Some of the top pitchers in the game. If it’s a slugger they need George brings the best to New York. Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, Gary Sheffield, or Alex Rodriguez will don the Yankee pinstripes. Having the best for the Yankees and their fans makes all the difference. We know as fans that our team is doing whatever it can to bring in a championship. And when all is said and done – what more can we ask for?
George is relentless. He wants another World Series ring for the Bronx Bombers. Six is not enough for him. Arriving at the playoffs 14 times is not the name of this game. Winning the World Series is the only game in town. I have to admire that kind of pursuit. I have always felt funny when I see a player or an owner in a TV interview rejoice when his team comes in second. Something feels off. Second place is not a prize worth having
But not with George. I love his spirit. I love his attitude about winning. I love winning it all in the fall. Has there been another owner in any sport, in the last 25 years that has operated with the same intensity that George has had? In any sport? I think not.
Say what you will about the big guy. He is money hungry, he has an ego problem, he stops at nothing, he plays unfair. I do not think he cares. what others are saying He has a cause and a mission. Bring championships to New York.

So I salute you George Steinbrenner, principal owner of my New York Yankees. Thanks for taking the team on your back and going for it all the time. While I may not agree with all your tactics I am fascinated with your ongoing will to win.
Imagine what it must have been like playing dominoes, or marbles or any other game with George when he was a kid. Do you think he had to win?
If Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, or Yogi Berra were playing on another team other than the Yankees and became available through free agency, do you think George would try and get him? What do you think?

Car Security And More

Cars nowadays are not only motor vehicles, but often have special items such as CD and DVD players, GPS systems , TV displays and sometimes even small computers. All these items are a tremendous attraction to thieves that will be extremely happy to break into a car and get each one of those pieces to re-sell them on the black market. For this reason car security became very important and went way beyond being just a protection for the car. As times go by and more technology will be available, car alarms will become more sophisticated and represent a true enemy against car theft.

Car security is becoming a lot like house security with remote controls, wireless systems, monitoring devices and even tiny sensors that would detect every little motion inside the vehicle. Extremely advanced systems will actually stop the engine from working and make it impossible to move the car without the proper key or activation code. It is safe to say that security systems became so difficult to go around that modern cars are very well protected in a world where the streets are unfortunately becoming more and more dangerous. Hence, car security is vital in the twenty first century. Awesome web directory is a great place for car security listings.

An Introduction to Tennis

Is tennis good for you?
Absolutely – tennis is a gentle way of exercising for beginners, and for more advanced players is a very thorough workout. Physical activity increases energy and also helps you to stay healthy, fending off germs and infections. Playing one set of tennis would give you thirty minutes moderate physical activity, not to mention plenty of fresh air!

How old do I have to be to start?
Obviously you have to be able to hold a tennis racket, but there are plenty of opportunities for youngsters. Mini Tennis is an excellent game for starting off young players under eight. Played with a scaled down racket, foam balls and a small court the game is a fun introduction to the full game.

How much will it cost?
Prices for coaching vary from club to club, but we always recommend keeping your lessons to half an hour or an hour, and to have group coaching.

How can I develop my game?
One way is to go for an intensive week of tennis, or a break where you can play tennis at your leisure, there are tennis holiday companies offering holidays both in the US and abroad. You can see a list of these in Clubs and Camps.

Once you have found a court to play on and you start to play tennis with your friends, family or other players, you will naturally start to get a feel for the game. A way to develop your hand-eye co-ordination is to practice throwing and catching the ball either against a wall or with a partner. Your tennis coach will have many other games and exercises to help develop the correct movement, co-ordination and dexterity for tennis.

If the full court seems too big at first, play a scaled-down version of the game in the four service boxes of the court. As you start to become more confident you will start to use tactics. Hitting a ball that comes near to you is easier than running to hit a ball – therefore you’ll soon realise that one aim is to try to make your opponent move in order to hit the ball. You will be better placed to hit each ball if you maintain a good position on the court before and after each shot, and you’ll begin to understand the importance of good positioning. Don’t get caught out of position to one side of the court or stuck half way between the baseline and the net.

Once you have mastered these basic principles, try to play to the weakness of your opponent. This might be their forehand, backhand, volley, smash, or perhaps running to the ball. Exploiting your opponent’s weaknesses will help you to start controlling the game. Also, remember to use your own strengths as much as possible. You may enjoy serving, have a strong cross-court backhand, love to volley and play from the net – try to do more of what you enjoy!

And keep at it! The world’s best players spend many hours training and improving their game. Success may not come immediately, so don’t get downhearted if you don’t always play at your best.

‘Tennis is a battle of minds, just as much as it is a battle of playing ability. Trying to expose your opponent’s weaknesses is one of the most vital and fascinating facets of tennis’

A NO B.S. Explanation of Spread Betting For Newbies

Note: The goal of this article is to give you the basic idea and an overview of what index betting. It is not meant to be a comprehensive and detailed explanation of the game.
Index betting, otherwise referred as Spread Betting is a bet type, where you are rewarded by the degree, in which you are correct in selecting a winner of a sporting event. The amount you stand to either win or lose is not fixed, and therefore, with index betting, you never really know just how much money you will win (or lose), until after the event is over, or until you have ‘closed out’ your bet.
Now straight up, I must say, that this form of betting appeals only to certain types of punters, because this can be a volatile type of investment. If the game or match doesn’t go as planned, you can be exposed to fairly hefty losses, because your downside can be, to an extent, unlimited. Anyone, who has traded options on the share market, should grasp this concept without too much trouble.
The concept is similar to that of the stock market, where if you like a team/player you ‘buy’, but if you think that the team/player will perform below market (or the bookmaker’s) expectations, you would ’sell’.
Spread companies offer a number of different markets on the one game/match. In some cases, it is staggering as to the number of index markets that they offer on the one event. The more common of these are the total point markets (where you bet on the total of the outcome scores), match margin (predicting the winning margin), and the performance indices (examples would be betting the finishing position of a player in a golf tournament, or the finishing position of a driver in a Formula One race).
Best Explained With an Example.
A Rugby Union match between Australia and England.
The total points market is 44 – 47. This means that if you fancy that the game will be a high scoring game, and that both teams will score more than 47, you buy at 47. If the end total for the game were 57 points, then you would be correct, and you win ten times your stake. In this example your stake is $10 per point, and $10 x 10 equals a profit of $100.
However, if the game total were only 37 points, you would be wrong to the tune of ten points, thus losing $100 (the difference between the buy price at 47 and the actual score).
The difference between the buy and sell prices is how the bookmaker makes his money.
Let’s look at a cricket game between Australia and England.
Australia is batting first, and the quote reads 220 – 230 for Australian runs. If you believe that Australia will make more than 230 runs, you buy. If you believe that Australia will make less than 220 runs, you sell.
Australia goes on to make 290 runs after a brilliant knock by Matthew Hayden. If you had bought Australian runs, you would be correct by 60 runs (290 – 230). You would collect 60 times your stake.
However, if Australia finds it difficult to score runs, and makes just 170, you will be wrong by 60 runs (230 – 170), thus losing 60 times your stake or $600 if you are using $10 as a unit.
Be aware, that the bookmaker naturally biases the spread in favour of the buy price. That is to say, we have an inherent built-in disadvantage betting the buy price, because of the way the bookmaker structures his spreads. He attempts to make the buy price less appealing, because of the disproportional number of punters who bet on buy prices.
There is much more demand for the buy price than for the sell. After all, the nature of a punter is to find a team or player who will perform well, as opposed to seeking teams/players who the punter believes will perform poorly. So keep this in mind, if you think that index betting is for you. You will find it much easier targeting the sell prices. Of course, this is not to say, that you can’t find good bets buying, but just, that they are a little more difficult to find.
Sports Acumen is the only Australian bookmaker, who is a licensed index bookmaker. If this type of betting appeals to you, then you will be pleased to know, that Sports Acumen offers ’spreads’ on many of the Australian sports, such as, the AFL and the NRL.
You may make a play at how many points a team will score over the regular season. For example, you believe that NZ Warriors are set for an ordinary year, so you sell at the spread of 31 – 33. This means, that you are betting, that the Warriors will score less than 31 points over the course of the season.
Starting off, it can be quite confusing getting your head around the concept. (I know, because it took me some time to understand fully and to grasp what was going on, and how I could make money from this type of betting.)
Don’t forget about Sports Acumen’s offer for a free bet up to $50.00. Simply mention Elk Publications to one of the customer service staff, or if you open your account online (www.sportsacumen.com), type in 6113 into the promotional code box, when completing your details, to ensure you receive your $50.00 bonus. You will have to deposit some money, and the first bet you make will be matched up to the value of $50.00.
This article has been just a very short overview of spread betting. If you are interested in the concept, and would like further information, Sports Acumen has an excellent booklet on spread betting, or alternatively, you may contact either Jess or myself, and we will be able to point you in the right direction.
Spread betting is certainly not for everyone, and if you are not 100% confident in understanding the spread betting market, then I would seriously suggest that you stay out of it, until you gain more knowledge. You certainly can make a lot of money from successful spread betting, but the opposite is also true, you can lose a lot of money, if it all goes pear shape.

Eat Healthy and Lose Weight – Part 2

Low-Fat + Exercise = Weight Loss

Reducing your saturated fat intake is only part of the healthy body formula. You need to burn more calories than you consume in order to avoid having that excess food stored as body fat. That’s where exercise comes into play.

These exercise tips can get you started on the road to losing weight and keeping it off:

- Always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program. This is especially true if you have, or are at risk of having, heart disease, diabetes, or you are seriously overweight.

- Practice moderation by beginning with light and low impact exercises like walking, and gradually increase your intensity as your body begins to become conditioned to increased activity.

- Aim for at least 30 per day of light cardiovascular activity each day. You don’t have to do all 30 minutes at once. You can spread it out over the day if you want to.

- Easy to do exercises include walking instead of taking the car on nearby errands. Take the stairs instead of the escalator when you’re going to the office or shopping at the mall. Take a walk during lunch time.

- Start doing things that are both fun and provide exercise. Gardening, bike riding, window shopping downtown.

- You can make exercise more enjoyable by wearing headphones and listening to music, or doing your exercises with a friend. Here are some dietary tips that can change, or save, your life:

These foods have been linked to various health conditions including cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Not all of these foods have been linked with all of these conditions, but each of them are worth avoiding when possible.

- High in saturated fats, these foods should be avoided at all costs: All saturated fats and oils found in butter, lard, palm and coconut oil, bacon grease.

Replace these foods with: Soft margarine (no fat kind), olive, safflower, soy, corn, canola, and peanut oil.

- These foods contain trans fatty acids and/or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and should be eaten only in very limited quantities: Hard margarines, most snack crackers, most cookies, corn and potato chips, shortening.

- These meats contain high levels of fat and can cause serious arterial blockage and heart conditions. They should be eaten very sparingly: corned beef, pastrami, pork and beef ribs, beef steak, ground meat, most frankfurters, pork sausage, bacon, liver, kidney, and processed deli meats.

Replace with these foods with skinless chicken or turkey, turkey or chicken frankfurters, ground turkey, occasional lean beef, veal, pork, lamb, fish, and vegetable dishes including beans, peas, pasta, or rice.

- Try not to eat more than 2 oz of meat, fish, or poultry per day. Replace the rest of your meal with healthy vegetables, pasta and rice.

- Be careful of fat that’s hidden in dairy products. Drink either fat-free or 1% milk. Replace other dairy products like cream cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, and snack cheeses with their no-fat or low-fat versions.

- Avoid eating high fat snack crackers, cake, cup cakes or muffins, and replace them with low-fat baked versions.

Stay out of the fast-food restaurants. There’s nothing good for you to eat there regardless of what they tell you on television.
