Wade is one-half of arguably the most dynamic 1-2 punch in the league right now, and later selections from ‘03 — Ridnour and Collison in the Pacific Northwest, Josh Howard down in Dallas, and David West in the imploding New Orleans organization — are making significant gains in their games.

With the apparent acceleration of the NBA’s learning curve, a question naturally arises: which players from the 2004 NBA Draft — current rooks — could become league-wide sensations by the midpoint of next season? Never fret. Hoops Avenue has your hook-up:

Emeka Okfaor, F/C, Bobcats: Okafor could swipe ROY honors this year. Ironically, his biggest threat is probably former teammate Ben Gordon, now a true “Baby Bull.” More on Gordon in a second, but Okafor has put the surprising Bobcats on his back. In a game against the Bulls this past weekend, he scored 26 to complement 12 rebounds, and is, statistically speaking, the 10th-best center in the NBA already. Okafor has had nagging back injuries since his days in Storrs, though, and he’s been sidelined for portions of his rookie campaign. If he can play through, and the lottery-bound Bobcats can nab one of the point guards likely to come out this year, Okafor’s stock could rise substantially in his sophomore campaign. He’s a smart baller, and with a true point guard — no offense, Jason Hart — he could be the man in Charlotte for years to come.

Dwight Howard, F/C, Magic: Howard should be getting more props from the media in general for his excellence on the boards — he’s a hair under 10 boards a game for the season, and his offense and defense improves consistently from week to week. Howard might get the media backhand because as high schoolers in the NBA go, he’s far short of Bron Bron, but far north of Kwame Brown at this point in their careers. Howard is still very young, and the cast in Orlando is eclectic. He probably won’t be a perennial All-Star, 20 and 10 guy until 2008, but watch his constant upward progress, whether for fantasy purposes or sheer enjoyment.

Ben Gordon, G, Bulls: I’ll save the comparisons to Vinnie Johnson — everyone who follows the league has read that more times than Gordon has lifted the Bulls in the fourth quarter. The true question with Gordon long-term is the same as all others in his mold: what happens when he becomes one of the five? When Gordon eventually enters the starting line-up, be it in Chicago or his next stop (wherever that may be), will his game change at all? Will he be more dominant, or slink to the background? Regardless, these are not questions you need to deal with next year — the Bulls are young, they’re learning how to win, and the East doesn’t figure to get significantly better this off season. Look for Gordon to be a catalyst for the next several years, and produce the gaudiest overall statistics of the 2004 class for the first four years of a career.

Andre Iguodala, F, Sixers: Iggy has some hops, and with C-Webb in town now to show him the ropes of being a NBA forward, he might develop ahead of the game. He’s our choice for a breakout star from this class in his sophomore campaign — it’s certainly a gamble, but Wade’s game this season (while always there) flourished because of the dominance of those (i.e. Shaq) around him. If AI and C-Webb become a major 1-2 punch in the generally punchless East, AI2 could be good for 18 points and 8 boards a night.

Josh Smith, F, Hawks: Smith’s sophomore ascent is questionable — the Hawks are horrific, and with few sure-fire prospects in the 2005 Draft, he probably won’t be surrounded with much talent. If he becomes the man in Hotlanta — which seems likely — he’ll eventually begin drawing double-teams, limiting his possibilities. However, as Smith matures, he could be the charismatic presence needed to lift Atlanta back into Eastern Conference respectability. He needs to diversify his game beyond his show-stopping dunks, and improve his 15-footer over the summer, but watch for this kid to break out a little bit more next year.

J.R. Smith, F, Hornets: Confused? Two Smiths, yet they’re not related. However, their situations are similar — New Orleans is a floundering franchise, and J.R. has been getting some good minutes down there. With few veterans to learn from, Smith is going to have to grow up alongside some other projects such as Dan Dickau, David West, et al. If he can hit the weights this summer and slice the lane more, he could be one to watch — not at the caliber of any 2003 guys in their second year, but building towards a decent, mid-level career.

Al Jefferson, F, Celtics: The Celtics are using considerable youth in their run to the Wacklantic Title. Al Jefferson, the HS product from Mississippi, might be the best of the bunch. He’s big, pretty strong, and has plenty of room for improvement — and a coach, in Doc Rivers, willing to give him that time. Jefferson, though, bears some resemblance to Jermaine O’Neal, and it took him about four seasons to rise up towards superstar level. Bet on Jefferson to break out big the same time that Howard does, providing a potential new big man rivalry on the Eastern seaboard.

No Excuse on Getting in Shape

America is getting more obese every year. Even our children are becoming dangerously obese, even though we are more self conscious over our appearance. So what’s the magic bullet to getting trim and fit. Well, I’ll be honest, there isn’t any. First, we are all limited by our heredity. If your father has a spare tire, you’re probably going to be predisposed to have one yourself if your a man. If you’re a woman, you are going to have fight off your mother’s big hips. Today Americans have more money than they ever have before. No matter what people say about the economy, gradually over the years, Americans have become richer, and they eat to prove it. Even poor families eat more than middle class families of previous generations. Poor families often find it even harder to lose weight because junk food is cheaper, and they don’t have enough money, or as much time to be active, other than working.

If your job requires you to sit all day, you are in a world of hurt as well. You are not going to burn very many calories sitting all day. Plus boredom tends to create a desire to eat more.

So what am I suggesting? Here are some thoughts you might want to consider. First of all, you really have to want to be in shape if you are going to have a prayer of losing weight. It’s not easy. You’ve got to want it. Second, you have to make a decision in your life to live healthier. Eat moderately all the time. Don’t starve yourself and set yourself up for failure later. Your metabolism is just going to slow down anyway.

Most of the time people just eat too large of portions. Keep your portions moderately sized, and eat more times a day. Stop eating when you are full. There is no need to stuff yourself every meal. And, contrary to what your mother may have taught you, you don’t have to eat everything that is on your plate. The smaller your portions and the more times you eat the faster your metabolism is going to be. Here is the biggest thing people don’t want to do. You have to exercise. Moderate exercise can bring you from obese to a much healthier size. Find activities you like to do, and do it. The more you enjoy it, the more you’ll be able to stick with it.

No excuses. There really is no reason not to attempt to get into shape. I heard something from a preacher’s sermon that really makes sense. He basically said that some men work half of their lives to make money, and then give away the same money the other half of their lives to try and regain the health they lost gaining the money in the first place. The idea is don’t put work in front of health. Health costs are getting worse all the time. Unless your health insurance is great, you can’t make enough money to overcome the health costs you are going to have if you don’t take care of yourself now. If your excuse is that you are too out of shape to do anything, or you just can’t cut back on your food because of depression, boredom, etc. Then see your doctor and ask what you can do to start heading towards physical fitness. You’ve got one life to live. So don’t waste it.

The biggest problem we face in America today is laziness. Pure and simple. Did you know that working out helps you when you are depressed or having problems with anxiety. The more you lay around, the more discouraged you are going to get. It’s a terrible cycle. People say they are too tired from working. I can understand that, but even 30 minutes a day can make a big difference. Work out during the commercials while you watch television. If you’ve got kids take them outside and play with them. Kids are doing nothing, but watching TV and playing video games. If you play with your kids your helping yourself and them at the same time.

It’s a lot easier to keep it off than it is to lose it after you gain it. So even if you think you are in great shape, don’t stop working out. It’s a lot easier to keep up a steady routine than to have to burn off extra fat. Your body tends to fight you when your losing weight by giving you cravings for food. Just remember your body is more important than your big screen. Don’t just sit back watching football all day. Go play some football. Live life don’t just be a spectator.

That said: It’s time to tell you how to create a full shoulder turn without stretching exercises for days or weeks on end. But I must warn you, it flies in the face of convention. However, I must also point out, that a current tour player (Vijay Singh) does it.

And what’s that he does?

He turns his hips too!

They don’t stay put. They move. They turn. Just doing that alone will put your shoulders half way behind the ball. The remainder can be done by turning your shoulders as well.

Pretty sneaky huh?

Next time you see video of Bobby, or Sam, or Vijay…observe the movement in their hips. Witness their ability to make a seemingly effortless shoulder turn…just before they smash their shot down the fairway.

Once you have chosen your goal, and you feel excited, you have another two-step to do in this process. These are vital steps and are the very steps that most people leave out.

Step 1 – A Decisive Goal.

Yep, you thought you had your ideal goal in mind. and yet you did. But you need to make it clear. For example:

If you want a new sports car, but you don’t know what make or model you want, what will happen?

Sure, you’ll get your car. But chances are, you get any old car.

How can this be?

There are millions of cars out there. There are more ordinary cars, than sports cars. So the chances are that you’ll end up with an ordinary car because your goal wasn’t clear. Your ordinary car may have a spoiler on it and a set of sports wheels. But it’s still an ordinary car.

How do you get your sports car, if that is your goal?

Details!

Ok, so you want a sports car. What type? What make and model? What year should it be. What size engine should it have? What color should it be? How should it sound? What mileage is acceptable on the clock? Should it be new or used? By what exact date do you want to own this car by?

Details, details, details.

So you want bigger muscle. Is it your biceps? Or do you want bigger muscle in your legs, chest, back, triceps, etc.? Exactly how much bigger do you want to be? How well defined do you want your muscle to be. When do you want to have achieved this goal by?

The same principle applies to any goal, even if it’s to become world champion at tiddlywinks.

Step 2 – A Clear Goal.

Now that you have chosen your goal, in step one above, it’s time to make it clear in your mind. Yes I know I said that you shouldn’t let your head rule your heart. But what you should do is follow your passion and desires. Then use your head to logically bring about those desires, even though it may be battling with you.

In your mind I want you to see your goal as exactly as you want it, with all the glorious detail. At the same time I want your emotions to run wild. Feel what it would be like to achieve this goal. Would you feel on top of the world? Are you on a high just thinking about it?

As you feel it, keep looking at it in your mind’s eye. Combine the power of both thought and emotion to feed your desire. The more you feed your desire, the closer to you goal you will get… provided you follow that with action.

Do this on a daily basis. Certainly first thing each morning and last thing at night. And numerous times in between where you can. It can be done anywhere.

Who’s going to know?

To summarize, decide what your goal is. Not through your head, but with your heart. Emotion is the key. Make your goal as detailed as possible. The ore detail there is, the better. Now see it in your mind. It must be a clear goal. Combining the power of emotion and the emotion of desire, you will be fired up to take the appropriate action to get you there.
