The play reviewer needs the broadcasting staff to review a contested play. One coach said that he didn’t trust any reviewer who was not Bear Bryant. How much skill does it take to see if a player’s knee was down before he fumbled?

The officiators have become television stars. Who was the moron that gave them microphones? The officiators give there usual penalty signals but still give them again when they make the announcement that the passer suffered from facemaskitis and that it’s first down half the distance to the goal. By the time they get there mike running, everybody knows what the penalty is, what down it is, and that the ball will be placed half the distance to the goal. My dead grandmother knows the hand signals.

Injuries are covered like the Kennedy funerals. Reports come back from the locker room that the player now has seven layers of tape on his foot instead of only five. Special report: they added another layer of tape.

Special reports tell you that the teams have played before and they slip old plays in between the current action. This confuses the hell out of us old folks.

Commercialization has completely taken over the college end of the sport. We use to have the Orange Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Rose Bowl and the Cotton Bowl. Here is a little test. What are those bowls called now? If you are going to commercialize college sports, then start paying the players more than tuition, board, and room. The players are risking their necks, suffering under big-mouthed coaches (well, not all of them), and beating their bodies into a lifetime of pain (except the kickers). Pay Them!

And then, there are those blasted brainless commercials. Well, sometimes they are more interesting than the game. Oh, and no more overtime would be good. A tie is a tie is a tie. Overtime is just like flipping a coin. Hey! Do that at the end of the game so that we can eat our dinner (supper in Idaho).

When I was 11 years old, my Dad was transferred from Miami to Kansas City. The biggest thing I was worried about was if they would have Match Box or Hot Wheel cars in Kansas. They did.

A bit of a culture shock, though a really good one.

One of the many really cool things that happened while living in Overland Park, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City, was we were there when the Chiefs won the Super Bowl. I’ve still got the poster, sweat shirt and the autograph of Otis Taylor, the Chiefs great receiver.

So any time the Chiefs play, I’m on their side.

I tell just about everyone with whom I work, whether counseling/coaching client, article writing student or mentee, whoever, that the fortune is in the follow through.

One of the places that football mirrors real life is in tackling. To make a successful tackle, you have to follow through. To be successful at anything in life, you have to follow through.

I lost track of how many tackles were missed by the Chiefs on Saturday. I saw many half tackles and arm tackles, and very few complete tackles.

When you don’t follow through on the football playing field, you lose. When you don’t follow through on the life playing field, you lose.

During World War II, it seemed that the end of Major League Baseball was eminent. Philip Wrigley (who owned the Wrigley chewing gum factory) was the owner of the Chicago Cubs at the time and was concerned for the future of baseball. The president of the professional league himself wanted to shut down the sport, thinking that the league would begin losing money due to lack of interest.

However, President Roosevelt convinced him otherwise. With new jobs opening up in factories where men had to leave the workplace to enter the Armed Forces, women were left to fill the positions. Seeing their ability to pick up where the men left off, Wrigley decided that women could play baseball (instead of their usual softball). Seeing that there was already an interest in women’s softball, they created a mixture of the two sports for the women to play, with an underhand pitch with a 12-inch ball being used with a standard baseball rule book.

The girls wore skirts (to appear as ladies) and were well paid. Wrigley himself invested $100,000 of his own money to fund the league, paying each of the first four teams $22,500 for the first season and using the remaining $10,000 to run the league office in Chicago.

Thirdly, leotards are okay if you are a super hero or playing one for Halloween. Superman, Batman, and many other comic book superheroes made the leotard okay. Its sleek tight fit make for a great outfit when fighting crime. No extra fabric to get snagged and nothing to resist wind as you fly or run at the speed of light. If you are going the super hero route, however; you must make sure you wear proper boots and cape to complete the ensemble. Also, superhero leotards should always be worn with bikini briefs over the top. Heroes are modest.

When it comes to leotard etiquette, you have to ask yourself if you should be wearing one. As a piece of clothing that stands out and leaves little to the imagination, you should think long and hard about what you are putting on if the option of a leotard comes up. If you are performing dance, performance art, or hair band music then you are probably okay. Also, if you are a super hero or just trying to play one for a costume party or Halloween, again, you should be okay wearing a leotard. If, though, you are more than a little overweight or not confidence in what you are displaying, a leotard is not okay. A good rule of thumb for leotard etiquette is when in doubt, wear something else or something over it.
