Located at the convergence of two tectonic plates, California is reich in serpentine rock. Which creates Chrysotile Asbestos. California is so abundant in this metamorphic material that it named serpentine its state rock in 1965. Even though history has shown that mankind has been aware of asbestos’ health hazards since the time of the Greeks, it wasn’t until 1990 that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) began to regulate the amount of asbestos in serpentine rock used in road surfacing applications. Asbestos deposits are found naturally in 44 of California’s 58 counties. Most abundantly in and around Humbolt, San Benito, Monterey, and El Dorado counties. A flourishing community in El Dorado County was constructed atop a sizable deposit of asbestos. Another location of EPA focus in California is the Clear Creek Management Area (CCMA), an enormous and extremely popular area of recreational land. Clear Creek Management Area is located on one of the world’s largest naturally occurring asbestos deposits. Test results at CCMA revealed recreational users of the management area are exposed to “very high” levels of asbestos. The dust particles from Asbestos get in the air that we breathe and into the lining of our lungs. Which causes a cancer of the lung lining known as Mesothelioma Cancer.
