Actions Speak Louder than Words: HSE Tells Directors

Company directors have been requested by the HSE to show commitment, and work for health and safety of the employees by going beyond the boardrooms.
Judith Hackitt, Chair of the HSE, speaking at the annual Rivers Lecture, told an audience of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators that greater credibility and effective leadership come with personal responsibility. In order to be responsible, it was necessary to move out of the boardrooms and meet the employees to understand the issues they face regarding health and safety. Reaching out to the places of work can show genuine concern towards the goodwill of the employees.
During the speech, Ms Hackitt stressed that health and safety should not be considered just a formality, it is something that should be engrained in the culture of a company. Moreover, managers who expect their subordinates to follow their instructions but do not set an example would never be effective in getting the message through. A worrying integrity gap can be created if the management or the board does not follow what it expects its staff to do.
Ms. Hackitt ended by saying that Chartered Secretaries and Administrators have the ability to influence the actions of their board so that eventually the change can trickle down to the lower levels of the organisation.
