Sydney Botulinum injections (B.tox for short) is swiftly becoming a necessity in Sydney society and now it has become a grooming necessity for those in Sydney.
Still I never fail to be astonished by the plethora of myths that surround the painless treatment. Here I have listed some of the more mistakes that we encounter all the time at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I am employed as a physician.
Mistake no. 1: I may lose my facial expressions!
The human face has approximately 60 muscles. Their unrelenting use can result in fine lines or wrinkles. If surplus B.tox is used the facial expression may become a little less expressive. The dose injected by most physicians will result in you looking refreshed, however you will continue to look every bit as animated.
By using a carefully calculated dosage of the wrinkle injection in precisely the right areas facial expression is retained whilst any fine lines are softened.
Mistake no. 2: Botulinum is toxic!
Actually there is a little truth in this. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the proper pharmaceutical terminology. An overdose can result in a decrease in muscle tone and even can cause illness.
But to maintain some perspective – an old pharmacy saying states that ‘everything is a poison – all depending on the dose’. All medicines in a large enough amount can make you ill. If you drink too great a quantity of water it can result in death.
Mistake no. 3: It will hurt!
The needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than a human hair. Several people have likened the treatments to getting bit by mosquitoes. Certainly not painful compared to having a regular shot.
Mistake no. 4: I might lose sensation in my face!
This is totally wrong. Botulinum medicine works primarily on the neuromuscular junction, and not on the nerves of sensation. B.tox only targets the relaxation of muscular tissues.
Mistake no. 5. You must keep getting B.tox otherwise the lines become more noticable!
This is also untrue.
You can expect B.tox to last for in the region of 3 months. Any treatments after the initial visit usually last a little longer. Gradually as muscle strength builds up again, the lines will eventually re-emerge. However your wrinkles certainly won’t be any deeper than before the treatment started.
As A Matter Of Fact any wrinkles will in general be less noticeable than if you hadn’t undergone B.tox – even if you don’t continue the treatment. Primarily due to the fact that your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the treatment.
