People Management: the Fundamental Points

Succeeding in the modern business world depends on good people management skills. You may succeed in learning these skills. Having a natural affinity for communicating with people and building relationships may be a plus, even so there are some things you can learn that will simplify the process.

Relationship Building: Start by remembering the names of the employees. Talk to people; look people in the eye when you’re speaking. Show respect, in addition listen to the other person’s point of view, even if you disagree or have another point of view. Paying attention to what others have to say is one of the most crucial human resource management skills in your arsenal. Welcome any comments from your co-workers. Exhibit integrity: Do not give promises you can’t fulfill. If your word is broken, it can destroy trust, and if they do not trust you people certainly won’t perform at their best. Each time you make a statement or make a promise, you are squandering your time and effort if you don’t follow through. To be frank, if your people can’t depend on your word, they won’t be there if you really need them. Be open to feedback: Feedback should be a two way process. Keeping an open mind with regard to other people’s ideas is very important in effective human resource management. If you are able to demonstrate that you are accessible and open, you establish that other people’s opinions are important to you, and they will appreciate your ideas. Honest discourse also encourages fresh ways of thinking, ways of achieving the mission of the team, and improves the company dynamic. By giving the employees to express their views, each member of staff takes ownership of the results.

Communicating is important: Communication is the key to managing individuals with skill. Maintaining an open door policy, listen closely to other people, keep an open mind, and permit all your team members to express their opinions. Inspire team members not just to speak to you, but also to talk to each other. The growth of a business relies heavily on the open exchange of opinions, and if the team members communicate effectively, it’s easy to discover problems swiftly, permitting corrective measures to be taken to prevent any further problems. A little time and effort is essential, but the payoffs far outweigh the effort required. Through building the bonds of a good team and by taking on board what your team has to offer, you can easily have the best in business success.

Something for Everyone to Take Notice of – Act Safety

It’s a frequent misconception in a significant amount of companies that, by providing employees with basic instruction in health and safety, they have got everything necessary to prevent a catastrophe. The reality is that, regardless of the industry you’re in, an education in health and safety regulations and risk asessment just isn’t enough. You need to provide your staff with an enthusiastic supervisor, not to mention equip them adequately and give them the opportunity to practice. Every team needs a great supervisor to oversee the work area, but this individual must also play another role. The supervisor you choose must see their health and safety training as crucial and be able to get everyone else feeling enthusiastic. As well as encouraging conformity with health and safety regulations, the employee supervising as well needs to make certain that every employee works well. This is a tricky task. It means that the supervisor is expected to have an in-depth understanding of the industry best practice and production in addition to a high level of knowledge of the safety regulations, the identification of hazards, and emergency assistance techniques. Just supplying basic training in health and safety really is not enough for your employees. Your staff have to acquire practical experience of risk assessment and the identification of problem areas. They have to know the best way of eliminating hazards not to mention knowing what to do if the unexpected happens. Not until these procedures become second nature are staff properly trained. Instruction is in fact ineffective without the required safety supplies. If they don’t have items that is necessary, or even learn that supplies are damaged only after an emergency has occurred, then all the safety training your employees have already finished will have been essentially of no benefit.

You need to examine every last item on a regular basis to make sure that all the essential equipment is where it should be as well as checking that it’s all in good working order. If you have a problem with your gear, make sure it is repaired or call out a service engineer as a matter of urgency.

Your workforce have to receive proper health & safety instruction, but in addition they must have decent equipment, the chance to practise, and a knowledgeable supervisor who gets the workforce excited about being healthy at work. Only then will adopting health and safety legislation will before long become a natural component of working life and no longer an inconvenience that staff have to try to remember constantly.

Improved Employment Verification Techniques Improves Results

Employment Verification is one of the most important and fundamental parts of the hiring process. Many companies currently outsource their Employment Verification. It is unlikely to expect the human resources department or even the prospective employees themselves to make many phone calls for the sake of Employment Verification. Not only is this extremely time consuming and possibly frustrating, but can cut into important productivity time which can consequently cut into the bottom line. In order to maintain quality assurance and keep productivity to a maximum, it only makes sense to outsource this process.

Recently, a company called VeraTrack uncovered a revolutionary and proprietary system that uses technology, and an automated system, to drastically reduce the strain that Employment Verification presents. All a company has to do is log in, enter the relevant information about both the company and the employee, enter the data to be verified, and then wait for a reply. The system subsequently sends notice to the previous company requesting that they log on (using a secret verification code) and fill out the necessary information. Once this step is complete, the hiring manager is notified, and the verification is finished.

Many corporations are leaning to this method of Employment Verification. Outsourcing is much easier and you are able to verify many more applications than if you were to call or fax all the employers on a resume by yourself. Outsourcing employment verificaiton is popular not just because of the time saved but because it keeps the previous employment information confidential. You have the ability to save your company time and money while assuring all of the files are secure. Signing up for this revolutionary way of performing Employment Verification ensures that you are getting the best candidates in a timely manner.

Here’s Some Eye-Openers Concerning Fire Safety Regulations

Nowadays some human resource managers feel that, by providing staff with training in occupational health and safety, they have got all the experience needed to cope with an incident. Realistically though, staff should have more than just a basic education in health and safety regulatory affairs. Equipping your workers, employing a good supervisior and facillitating frequent practise are all important factors.

Your employees must have a great supervisor to keep an eye on the work area, yet this individual must also perform a much more important function on the floor. Your choice of supervisor needs to see their health and safety training as fundamental and be able to get other people excited. In addition to enforcing rules and regulations, the supervisor also needs to make certain that employees perform all work efficiently. This isn’t a simple task. A good standard business knowledge is an essential for a supervisory position not to mention an advanced understanding of current legislation involving safety, risk assessment and CPR.

It’s just not enough to merely send your staff to a health and safety course. They need to get practical experience of risk assessment and the recognition of problem areas. Staff additionally need a good of the necessary safeguards that they are required to put in place not to mention knowing what to do when the worst happens. Employees are only protected when their training and procedures have become a habit.

Good safety apparatus is every bit as important to the your workers’ safety as training. If they don’t have gear that is necessary, or even notice that items are broken only after a crisis has occurred, then all the training there is to offer won’t help them.

Servicing your equipment on a regular basis is fundamental. If something is in poor order, get it mended or call out a maintenance professional as quickly as possible. Health and safety education is vital to the safety of your workforce, but they require the proper apparatus, frequent practise drills, and a knowledgeable supervisor who gets the workforce charged up about working safely. Only then will following health and safety legislation will before long become a normal component of working life instead of an inconvenience for everyone to remember.

What is a Fresnel Lens?

Over the past 25 years I have had the unique opportunity to talk directly with many of the professionals and instructors who use Overhead Projectors as an integral part of their profession. Through these interactions I have accumulated notes and information that has inspired me to write these articles that pertain to some of the most common problems experienced by owners of today’s and yesterday’s Overhead Projectors. This is the seventh article in a series of
articles that will be written from a professional Electronics Technicians point of view in regards to some of today’s most common Overhead Projector problems and questions.

What is a Fresnel Lens?

If you have ever looked at the lens of your Overhead Projector (the lens that sits under the glass where you lay your transparencies) you may be reminded of a magnifying glass. And in some ways you are right. The idea of the Fresnel Lens in your Overhead Projector is to focus the beam of light produced by the projection lamp, projecting it to the optics in the head assembly and on to your wall or screen. Unlike a conventional magnifying lens that is thick in the middle and tapers down to nothing at the edges, the Fresnel lens is a single thickness all the way across.

This thin piece of plastic magnifiying lens found in your Overhead Projector is called a Fresnel Lens. It is flat on one side and ridged on the other. In most cases there are two pieces of this thin acrylic lens placed together often referred to as a dual element Fresnel Lens.
Fresnel lenses were first used to focus the beam of light in lighthouse lamps. These plastic lenses are used where a concentrated light is required. The Fresnel lens serves the same purpose in your Overhead Projector where a concentrated beam of light is required to project your image on to a screen or wall.

How do I clean my Fresnel Lens?

The typical overhead projector has a top piece of glass (stage glass) and just below that is a plastic lens with lots of circular lines on it (the Fresnel lens). Most Fresnel Lenses are marked on one side indicating which side goes toward the lamp. If you know how to remove it, just take it out and reinstall it the correct way. You should never use glass cleaner on the Fresnel Lens,it can destroy the plastic lens. To clean your Fresnel Lens a soft cloth dampened with water or cleaner approved by the manufacturer should be used. A word of caution here: handle the Fresnel lens with care to avoid scratches or other types of damage, this lens is a very expensive part of your Overhead Projector.

After you re-install the Fresnel Lens and you suddenly get a blurry round spot instead of a clear image from your Overhead Projector, you will find that the Fresnel Lens is probably installed upside down. No need to panic, simply remove the lens and re-install the correct way. This is a common problem for those who have removed this lens while cleaning the dust out of their Overhead Projector.

Where can I purchase a new Fresnel Lens?

Fresnel Lenses can be purchased from the manufacturer or from an authorized parts distributor.

Team Building-the All Inclusive Way

More and more people are booking “all inclusive” holidays. These are the ones that have all meals and (usually locally produced) drinks included in the base price of the holiday. Providing the food is appetising and (for me) the beer is drinkable, they do just fine.

Flicking through a travel brochure the other day, I got to thinking what other commercially available offerings could be all inclusive. I decided that team building is certainly one.

“What’s new?” I hear you ask. “I’ve never had to pay for my drinks or food on a corporate away day.” Well, food and drink are not the only – or even most important – resources at an away day or conference. The people are.

So how does the term “all inclusive” apply to the team members themselves? It’s easy – think about it. They all need to be included in the activity. Sounds simple, yet I’d wager that most team building days don’t follow this simple piece of advice.

What does the term “team building” bring to mind for you? Whether they enjoy them or not, most people think of quad-biking, abseiling, orienteering or some other outdoor activity. These are activities that appeal to a certain type of person but not all. As and when a manager chooses such an option, he or she is probably forcing some members of the team to go against their wishes – or feign illness on the day. Those diligent enough not to “pull a sickie” are more likely to dislike – and perhaps even hate – every minute of the day.

So what is the answer? Select an option that meets the lowest common denominator? Choose a tea party with charades? No – this has exactly the same problem at the other end of the scale. The more extrovert, adrenaline junkies will savour this kind of activity every bit as much as their less physically-inclined colleagues would enjoy jumping off a cliff.

Does this mean that team building days are doomed to mediocrity? Selecting something that offends the least rather than inspires the most?

No. You can choose an “all inclusive” option. And these tend to have more parallels back in the workplace as well, making real team development more likely.

An all inclusive activity is one that has a core challenge or task that is ongoing throughout the session. This core challenge will contain the overall goal of the group, or teams within the group if it is a competitive activity. It will be something that everyone can either do or play a part in. Ideally it will also be something that people will most likely enjoy, although it is not essential that everyone does enjoy it.

Parallel to the main challenge should be ancillary challenges that are optional and wide-ranging. These tasks should make sense within the overall context of the main challenge. That is, people will not wonder what relevance they have to meeting their overall goal or feel that the link is unrealistically tenuous.

Chosen well, these discrete yet integrated challenges are what make a team building session all inclusive. Include some that will appeal to those who like a physical challenge and the adrenaline junkies will be happy and involved. Include some construction tasks and the engineering-inclined will be ecstatic. Include some more cerebral tasks and those who enjoy using their grey matter will be in their element.

Make each of these ancillary challenges optional and people can choose their own idea of fun for the day and genuinely contribute to their team’s achievement. Everyone will leave happy and the opportunity is there to highlight the similarities to the workplace and identify real team improvements.

The best teams have people within them with a mix of interests and skill sets. Their effectiveness is determined by how these different skills are used within a team context to maximise the outputs of the team. Different people using different skills in parallel. An all inclusive team building session is simply one that mirrors real life.

Business Results Begins by Developing a Compelling Vision to Communicate Why You Are In Business

On a construction site, three masons were working. Each one was busy with a trowel, cement and bricks. A passer-by went up to the first one, who looked very bored and asked him what he was doing. “I’m laying bricks,” he said sullenly.

The passer-by then approached the second man who looked somewhat more enthusiastic and asked the same question. “I’m building a church,” was the reply.

Walking up to the third mason who was whistling, the passer-by again asked the same question. The mason stopped his whistling for just a moment and with great joy and excitement said: “I’m building a cathedral.” This response astonished the passer-by.

So, what is the point of this brief story. Simply – What are you building? Why do you work for your company or why did you start your company? What is the underlying reason you firm is operational?

We all need a purpose, a vision, a mission – call it what you like – to motivate us to action. A vision is a rallying cry. It is a short, powerful statement. It empowers all the shareholders and makes them believe they can do whatever needs to be done.

Think of the following: We will overcome! Or Workers of the world unite! A famous hotel chain had a simple vision: Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen.

What is your company’s vision? It is a rallying cry? Or is it like one of those typical, long winded, expensive, stale corporate statement hanging on the walls in many reception areas? The real question to be answer is: Are you living that vision? HINT: If you aren’t living that vision, this may help to explain why you are not doubling your results.
