All-In Perspective Shoving all your chips as a bet in poker is a very dramatic move. It is both exciting and terrifying at the same time. Other Everest players might view this as a chance to win a lot of chips, or as a clear signal to dump their hands and run. For the bettor, it can be a scary move unless the player is absolutely holding the nuts. Newcomers to poker games tend to use it too much or to avoid using the tactic all together. There are times when the all-in is more effective and then situations where it is very risky. It’s probably one of the most misunderstood tactics in poker. The best time to use the all-in is when you have hit a good hand and don’t want any other callers. For instance, when you are dealt a high pocket pair and simply want to pick up the blinds. But if called, then your chips are at risk because no matter how good your hand is, it can get busted. Even Aces get cracked sometimes. When the flop completes a strong hand, such as a set of three or two pair, the all-in could win the pot right away. Going all-in when you know you are holding the nuts, such as hitting quads with no straight flush possible, is a wasted move unless you know your opponent will call you and make an even bigger pot. You want to maximize your profit here and not scare off your opponents. An all-in bet offers three strategic values: It forces everyone to fold so you scoop the pot; or it entices another loose player to call you when you know are holding the winning hand. It’s third use is to bluff, but that is risky and should only be attempted on well-thought out situations against predictable players.
