Wind Turbine Energy

Wind Turbine Energy
Power out of thin airit’s no magic trick

Properly placed wind turbines can generate electric power anywhere the wind blows steady and strong.

Wind turbines use the momentum of moving air to quietly turn large blades that are attached to the shaft of an efficient electric generator.

TVA’s wind power site is on Buffalo Mountain near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. In 2004, TVA greatly expanded its wind generating capacity when it added 15 very large turbines to the three original, smaller turbines at the site. Wind energy is now a major contributor to Green Power Switch. What are the benefits of of wind energy?
The production of wind energy creates no air pollution and, if the turbines are sited properly, has minimal environmental impact. By including wind generation in Green Power Switch, TVA and the distributors of TVA electricity are introducing this clean technology to the Tennessee Valley. This is the first commercial-scale use of wind power to generate electricity in the southeastern United States.

What is the role of wind energy in Green Power Switch?
With the inauguration of TVA’s expanded wind site in December 2004, wind energy became a major source of power supply for Green Power Switch. Fifteen new turbines were added to the TVA wind site on Buffalo Mountain near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. They are located near the three smaller turbines originally built in 2000. The site is on a two-mile ridge line facing southwest, the predominant wind direction at the location. The newer turbines were built by Invenergy Wind LLC, and TVA is purchasing their output under a 20-year, $60 million power-purchase agreement.

Website Shows Broadband Speeds Across UK

There has been a lot of discussion recently on improving the broadband availability in the UK, and making internet accessible to people in smaller towns and villages. A new website is now offering a clear depiction of how different regions in the country fare in terms of broadband adoption and speed levels.

The geographical website launched by Point Topic and Gavurin lets the users access comprehensive information on Broadband in the UK through G-View, an innovative mapping technology.

The information, which would interest many, is the area-wise distribution of broadband speeds. There are three categories, under which the entire country has been divided. The first is the “High Speed Heaven”, which includes areas where internet access speeds are above 8MB; second is the “Average Access” category, which lists down regions that have a speed range of 2MB to 8MB; and the third is the “Slowband Land” which lists places with dismal internet access speeds below 2MB. If you want to quickly and accurately compare broadband in your area, click Broadband Genie, for a personal recommendation.

According to the data, areas such as Northern Ireland and Wales are at the bottom, as they have less than average broadband speeds. On the other hand, London has done very well, and has 93% of all its connections coming in the ‘above 8MB’ category.

Oliver Johnson, CEO of Point Topic, says that with this new broadband mapping service, people will be able to assess the level of broadband in an area with relative ease. He believes the simple and effective interface will be popular among the users, who will find it much easier to work with as compared to conventional charts and numbers.

Mobile Broadband Keeps Me in Touch

I think that there is no doubt that when you begin to connect to the rest of the world through the weird wide web you soon appreciate what an incredible situation it is to be able to speak to someone in Manila on messenger one minute and then talk to your sister in San Francisco on Skype the next.

I did think that this was the pinnacle of communication and surfing for strange and useless information was the ultimate pastime. That was before I discovered the concept of taking your Internet connection with you. I purchased a small cheap laptop four months ago and connected it via a cheap pay as you go mobile broadband hook-up, and it opened up yet another brave new world for me.

I spend a lot of time on the road, but now I can communicate with anyone anywhere, basically for free. If I’m bored I can surf the web for news or the latest sports results, I can play games with people on the other side of the globe during my lunch break while they are relaxing before going to bed.

Taking the computer mobile changes a person’s perception of being in contact with the rest of the world at any time in any place. In an increasingly isolated world, mobile connections to the Internet keep me in contact with the world at all times.

Get Going with Internet Telephony with a Service Provider

The expansion of high speed Internet access combined with the flexibility and cheaper cost of calls using VoIP in the UK has made this emerging technology very attractive to prospective customers. Voice over IP is now one of the rapidly-growing applications on the internet with around four million VoIP users in the United Kingdom alone, not including business subscriptions.

The initial step that needs to be taken when considering getting an account is to research the available VoIP providers and the range of services they offer. Once the provider and service have been decided upon the next stage is setting up your account. This is relatively straightforward but do keep in mind that you should check your service offers a local number. Some services don’t cover every phone exchange in which case you are likely to be offered a number from the nearest exchange thats available.

Having a non-local number may not seem a critical factor when VoIP is used for outgoing calls, it will matter to your family and friends when they make long distance (or national rate) calls to contact you even though they may live in the same road. There are some VoIP companies that only offer non-geographic numbers, using codes such as 0870, 0845 or 056. In the case of non-geographic numbers some limitations exist: Calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers are prohibited from most landline, mobile and VoIP providers’ all-inclusive call packages. In the case of 056 numbers, it is not possible to call them from outside the UK at present.

Thought should be given to ensuring you have access to a landline as a backup. The reason for this is that if there is a blackout you are likely to lose your broadband connection – because the router and ADSL modem need power – and your VoIP access too, because the VoIP equipment needs to be connected to the mains. There are some types of VoIP equipment that offer a emergency option that will connect emergency calls, and all calls if there should be a power failure, to a landline. You should check this point with your provider if you feel that you need to have this option included in your service.

Some VoIP service providers offer services that allow you to pay for calls as you go while others offer a service that charges a single, all-inclusive fee. Plans offering unlimited local and national calls are also available for small businesses and for residential users. In the case of businesses additional features such as a free fax service are often included. There is a plan out there to suit you!

Just contact the VoIP company of your choice and they will set up an account for you. The average person should be up and running with VoIP in about half an hour. Join the internet telephony revolution now!

Mass Market Laptops for Gaming Have Arrived

Can you recall the era when laptops for gaming were not so affordable? They were small volume sellers and high profit generating items. They were the kind of laptop computer that everyone desired, however the cost didn’t fit in their budget. I believe you would say they were the best laptops around, at least power wise. Having mentioned that many of us probably didn’t buy laptops of this kind because of the cost. The outlook for gaming laptop computers is now seen by the big companies as a golden opportunity for them.

If mass manufactured, manufacturers can bring forth huge revenues on gaming notebooks. With such thin margins on other laptop computers its not a surprise they want to be involved. In addition they know they can persuade people to buy laptops like these better than small outfits. I believe littler system builders are very worried about this. The top notch technology will quickly make its path into the view of the everyday consumers. In addition we just appear to trust bigger companies more.

I reckon its unfair that as it comes with an established brand name they are automatically considered the best laptops. I still reckon that 2nd tier system builders will gain significant support from this. Most of the time the pre built systems are good performers however not fast enough and some buyers do not take well to that. These consumers have the technical knowledge and will decide which laptop computers are best. For a few purchasers specs and performance data are more important than aesthetics.

For the customer, this has numerous plus points. In the end the cost will drop further and more people will be able to purchase such advanced technology. I reckon even industry insiders will have a difficult time seeing where the market is going.Prices will possibly remain consistently high as there are always new laptops being released. Established manufacturers have involved themselves with the gaming laptops division so only time will tell what how this affects the market.

Wireless Weather Stations

In the Midwest region of the United States, the general topics of conversations are always focused on the local football teams and the growth of crops in that year. But, by default, the conversation always leads to the weather report and news. In states like Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, any news about weather is a hot topic of discussion. In fact, here weather is spelt with capital “W”, which reflects, how seriously weather is monitored here by both individuals and the media. Weather in these states signifies thunderstorms, tropical depressions, tornados, blizzards, squall lines, stationary fronts, cold fronts from Canada, warm moist Gulf air, Katrina, and hurricanes. It’s easy to detect the onset of any of these events by monitoring few basic conditions.

It is easy to monitor the weather conditions in your backyard, apart from monitoring the weather through TV or radio, with the use of wireless weather stations – an invention of the progressing wireless technology. These weather stations have changed how to read the weather. You no longer require running the cables out of the window or to attach a large unattractive thermometer to your house to monitor the outdoor temperature.

A wireless weather station enables a central display unit to receive information such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, and rainfall from sensors located up to 80 feet away through 433MHz transmission. It is composed of a radio station and a base station. The remote station is powered by solar energy and wakes up once in a minute to collect and transfer the data. Thus the weather information can be viewed on the pc screen, on a swap of a finger. So, now know the weather conditions in your backyard rather than trying to find the news on what’s happening around the local airport or the city center.

Wireless Weather Station provides detailed information on Compare Wireless Weather Stations, School Wireless Weather Stations, Wireless Digital Weather Stations, Wireless Home Weather Stations and more. Wireless Weather Station is affiliated with National Weather Service Radars.

What Direction Are Notebooks Headed In

The notebook computer industry has gone from strength to strength in recent times. Taiwanese companies have said part shortages will affect fullfilment this year due to the big demands. Laptops have just been an amazing market to watch. There has been no slip in sales. I think what makes it difficult is that the thing changes all the time.

An increasing number of consumers are purchasing notebooks for gaming these days. Prices are also declining because the technology cycles have become so small for laptop computers. I think notebooks are a excellent option for playing games. Maybe not exactly for the hardcore but they’re super for the majority of us. Further positives to come from advanced manufacturing techniques is compact, cooler parts that give way for slimmer, slick cases. Though gaming notebooks have come a long way in many aspects, in relation to pure power they still can’t compete with desktops. Gaming notebooks are the yardstick of performance for the laptop industry and it will be exciting to see how the upcoming technology fairs.

Sometimes the popular mass market notebook computers just aren’t adequate for what we require them for so custom laptops will forever be around. With custom built notebooks you traditionally get to discover what brand of parts is going into the laptop. You can typically save cash on specs you don’t need by specing the laptop to your needs. Prebuilt laptops are manufactured for consumers who have common needs and that may not be you right? So plainly this is why you require a custom laptop. There’s tons of companies offering custom notebooks, with outstanding customer support. To me this is a massive plus.

We’re witnessing some fairly cool stuff at the moment and I’m curious what will be introduced next. Basic ultra portables are the popular thing. I was never expecting vast amounts of consumers to like the technology. Ideally people would prefer an ultramobile portable with a 15.4″ lcd. I firgure forming an appealing price point is a prime roadblock in all this. Sure enough the technology is here. The way the market is developing I predict gaming notebooks will become smaller. Though notebooks technology follows plans theres forever going to be a gadget that changes all that.

Additionally scope out out these cheap gaming laptops.

A Technician’s Toolkit: What’s in the Bag

If you fix computers regularly (or you’re the type that often fixes computers for friends and family), you’ve likely developed a collection of software and tools to help you fix things more efficiently. Since I ocasionally play technician myself, I thought I’d share with you some tools that make it easier to troubleshoot everyday PC problems.

Have a good collection of software

Quality software will help you diagnose and fix many problems. If someone needs Windows reinstalled and you don’t have the CD, then what? You may want to purchase a CD binder to hold all your software. Here’s a sampling of what you’ll find in my kit:

> Two boot CDs with diagnostics programs
> Linux live CDs including Ubuntu and Knoppix
> three versions of Microsoft Office (including 2003)
> Windows 95, 98SE, 2000, XP Home and Pro (plus a special corporate licensed version)
> Applicable service packs and patches for each version Windows on one CD
> two CDs with various benchmarks on them
> Visual Studio .NET
> Three utility CDs with antivirus/antispyware programs and commonly used applications like Adobe Reader
> Norton Ghost
> Partition Magic
> Many more random disks

Carry common cords

> USB cable – The most common peripheral interface
> Firewire cable
> Standard PC power cord
> Ethernet cable (might want to carry 2-3 of these)
> Wireless USB adapter – Helps avoid having to run 30 feet of ethernet cable just to get a machine online. Why use cabling if there’s a wireless network in the area?

A way to move and store files

Some use a thumbdrive on a keychain, but I find that the size limit of flash memory is to constrictive when working on a PC. I carry a 160GB firewire/usb external hard drive as part of my kit. That way, if I need to backup someone’s files or I just want to work on something from another computer, I have everything at my fingertips.

A few screwdrivers and things…

Every PC technician carries their trusted phillips head screwdriver at all times, right? The standard size fits most desktop screws, but you may want to get a mini-screwdriver kit to work on laptops. Three-prong screw grabbers (or tweezers) are great for when you drop a screw into or underneath the motherboard. Alternatively, you could just get a magnetized screwdriver and pick screws up with it. Carrying a small flashlight will help you see into the dark recesses of the case, and needle-nose pliers come in handy for hard drive jumpers. Lastly, have a notepad, post-it notes and a few pens and pencils in there.

Useful testers

> Power Supply Tester
> Network cable tester
> Motherboard tester (usually PCI, outputs BIOS codes)

Get a good bag

How are you going to carry all this around? In a good bag of course. I use a mid-sized briefcase, but any tough duffel will do.

Outside of the diagnostics, many technicians carry common spare parts such as:

> Wireless router
> CD-RW Drive
> Standard ATX Power Supply 300-500W
> Internal hard drives (40GB, 80GB, 120GB)
> Surge protector
> Speakers

These are the basics for day-to-day troubleshooting. For those performing more advanced diagnostic procedures, I might also recommend a soldering iron. You might also want to try carrying an iPod (or any music player) – but not for technical reasons. It provides an excellent source of entertainment while you’re watching the progress bar creep.

What’s It Going To Be?

Computers are one of the most interesting and complex machines on the planet. They have the ability to intrigue anyone who sits down and attempts to use it. On the other hand though, they also have the ability to confuse the heck out of you! When I think about computers, I think about the internet, Microsoft Word (for school), and games. What sort of computer I buy should be user friendly in all three of these aspects.

First you have to make a big decision… Apple or Windows. They both have great features, and are both more user friendly for each individule user. Windows is compatible with several computer manufacturers, including HP Pavilion, Compaq, and Dell.

Now, in my case, I need to take a close look at each option, as I have specific uses for my machine. When purchasing a computer you should be aware of what your main purpose with it is. For some it is business, others gaming, and for many, it is used for school. Make sure you test each version, Apple and Windows. If Apple seems the most compatible with your purpose, then congradulations! Your choice is made. But if you decide Apple is not right for you, take a look at all the operating systems that there is for Windows. There are several, each with different features, and you should choose the one that is right for you.

As you can see, the purchase of a computer is not always black and white. What’s it going to be for you?

Scientist Wipeout Half of Endangered Pupfish

My local rag printed an article by Louis Sahagan of the Los Angeles Times. It seems that the Devil’s Hole pupfish have been brought to the point of extinction by the site management of the National Park Service at Death Valley National Monument.

The insignificant little pupfish survived since the last ice age by people leaving them alone. Then the environmentalist went crazy in their try to save them. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of pupfish in 1976.

You can read the history of Death Valley at http://www.death-valley.us/history.html.

Devil’s Hole is a 70 x 10 feet pool that is very deep. Divers have dived to 468 feet without finding the bottom. The pool is fenced off and only National Park Forest scientists are allowed to kill the pupfish. Two years ago they killed 80 in one fell swoop.

Well, they didn’t kill them on purpose, but the Park Service only expects 50 to be alive at the time of the next spawning.

What happened was that trapping jars got washed into the pool by a flood. The little fishes swam into the trapping jars and died. That made the Park Service want to toss their cookies. One said, “Oh, S—-” (Well, not really. Or maybe.)

Now there are other kinds of pupfish in Death Valley. In fact there are five species of fish in Death Valley, soon to become four species. The reason says the Park Service is that Devel’s Hole pupfish are no longer sexy and may not bother to breed.

Maybe they have been watching too much television. (Not the park rangers, the fish.)

You can learn how Death Valley got its name at http://www.death-valley.us/article560.html. Lot’s of people have died there and more will. The Park Service tells folks they can die out in that godforsaken hole. The Park Service leaves them alone after that and they die. But what about pupfish? If the Park Service leaves them alone will they survive?

I think we should try an experiment. The Park Service has built a fence around the pool to keep people out. Now they need to build another fence around the first fence to keep the Park Service and all others out.

In 2076, in commemoration of the Supreme Courts 1976 Decision a fish store owner from Burbank will be allowed to go into the area and take a peek to see if there are any pupfish left.

If he sees them he is to say, “DARNED IF I COULD not SEE ANY FISH IN THERE.” Very low emphasis is to be placed on “not.” By the time his statement sinks in, the scientist will be on their way to Montana to check the grizzly bear population.
